Stuck with Steam

Hello there,

I am at my wits end with trying to get Steam to work with Wine on my Arch x64 install and any pointers will be greatly appreciated!

What I have done so far is install wine/wine_gecko/winetricks via pacman (along with lib32-ati-dri like it suggests on the wine wiki page) then ran winecfg.

I have run

winetricks corefonts allfonts tahoma gecko vcrun2005

The gecko part suggested installing to /usr/share/wine/gecko/ as the WineHQ website says which has been done.

Then finally downloaded and installed the SteamInstall from the Steam website.

Now, I get the sign-in dialogue which I can use and log in to. After "Connecting to Steam account:..." the window disappears and the process ends.

Console output:

$ wine Steam.exe

I installed the optional dependencies for wine, installed steam through winetricks, removed the .wine folder and tried again, all haven't remedied the situation.. Any ideas?

Re: Stuck with Steam

Use pacman to install gecko see if that will fix it.

pacman -S wine_gecko

Edit: You should also check out arch's wine wiki entry and follow that.

Re: Stuck with Steam

I very recently reinstalled a new Steam prefix ( I was having issues with Steam Cloud, but it turned out to be corruption in /appcache and not wine. ), and to my surprise after creating a new prefix and logging into Steam, it struck me I didn't install anything via winetricks. No fonts, nor vcrun as I had to in the past. Infact I didn't even install directx and still get the same FPS in the game I play, however for that I had to install two additional fonts.

Try: ( Downloaded installer from Steampowered.com, not via winetricks )

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_steam msiexec /i SteamInstaller.msi

I usually get prompted to install gecko during the configuration of the wine prefix ( twice I might add ), to which I simply cancelled.
From then on I was able to log into Steam, usually have to add a code from an email, then Steam update should begin and once it's all over, Steam would launch.

At least, that's how my story went...

ps: Oh, to launch ( games ) I use: ( Parameters in brackets "[]" are optional and not useful for debugging )

cd ~/.wine_steam/drive_c/<where>/<steam.exe_is_installed>; WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_steam [WINEDEBUG=-all] wine steam [-applaunch 000 -dxlevel 00 -novid -etc]

I believe Steam installs to "~/wine_prefix/drive_c/Program\ Files\(\x86\)/Steam" by default, however I usually install things to "C:\" or "/drive_c/<here>" to make my life easier.

I have done both with no luck.

I also tried Kaustic's prefix idea with(and without) winearch

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_steam msiexec /i SteamInstall.msi

I found something that suggested it may be the open source ATI driver and people have had more luck with the catalyst one. The Catalyst one seems to perform terribly compared to the xf86-video-ati driver in GNOME though, all animations lag and nothing is very smooth.

Re: Stuck with Steam

I've never had to really use WINEARCH personally ( 64bit and Nvidia ).

Any new errors?
Have you tried running it in a virtual desktop? ( This option at least fixes the annoying window dragging issues. )

I have also tried virtual desktop with the same result. I get "Connecting to steam account: ..." then the 'cancel' button pops up after a minute then it disappears as follows:

Re: Stuck with Steam

Both your log and mine look roughly the same, including the err:[ors] with one expection:

err:ntdll:RtlDeleteResource Deleting active MRSW lock (0x1121cc), expect failure

With some basic Googlefu, this lead me to this bug 19179. It is old though ( abandoned ), which leads to a very obvious, but perhaps presumed question:

Which version of wine are you using? ( Currently the latest is Version: 1.3.35-3 from pacman -Qi wine. )

PS: I notice you're using "wine steam.exe", have you tried without .exe? ( as per my example )

Unfortunately my Googlefu isn't quite as good as I hoped sad

Re: Stuck with Steam

I am having the same problem. Also on x86_64. It gets to "connecting to [account]..." then that window just disappears.

I notice that in both of our cases wine complains about something called "SECUR32" missing... are we missing some dependency? I have installed wine_gecko via pacman, as well as the needed fonts according to ArchWiki

Also, when I try to run Steam.exe after this happens, it gives me an error window: "Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to write to the current Steam application folder. Please move Steam to a folder where you have write privileges."
chmod 775 -R .wine/* does not fix the problem, so I'm not sure it's actually a permissions problem.

Re: Stuck with Steam

Actually, navigating to the installed directory and using "wine steam" fixed my previous problem, but now it just show the connecting to window and disappears, like before.

Re: Stuck with Steam

Ah, I found the fix for me. I forgot to install lib32-intel-dri. After I did that, Steam started up.

Re: Stuck with Steam

That's normal.

There seems to something about launching steam as "steam" and not "steam.exe".
I remember reading this somewhere, perhaps a comment, but I've always excluded ".exe" and it has always worked. Saying that, SteamOverlay worked for me when it apparently "didn't". ( ~1 year ago )

I've tried installing WINE with PlayOnLinux, without PlayOnLinux, with WINETricks... but I get the same result every time. The error about libmpg123 is odd, since I verified with pacman that it's installed. I'm using the ATI Catalyst 11.2-1 drivers, and everything on my system is up-to-date. Any progress on this would be excellent. big_smile

Re: Stuck with Steam

Do you have lib32-mpg123 installed? ( I'm assuming you're on 64bit as you didn't mention otherwise. )

Re: Stuck with Steam

One thing worth trying, that is working for me quite well right now, is running/installing Steam in a 32bit wineprefix. So create another wineprefix using

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine32/ winecfg

Then install Steam

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine32 wine msiexec -i SteamInstall.exe

I just tried this the other day and this has by far been the most stable Steam has run under wine for me, I have been able to install games and those games have been able to install the stuff they need to run (.NET Framework, directx etc.) without any issues.

Edit: Spoke too soon about no errors. lol. Okay so games requiring/using .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 won't work, because 3.5 SP1 doesn't work in wine yet. They may work somewhat but do expect crashing.

Nice call. That removed the libmpg123 error, but unfortunately, that's not the main problem.

@KingX:
That actually got me closer (I'd say) than before... but I still get the same results. I tried logging in with an incorrect password, and it tells me my password is incorrect. However, when I login with the correct password, I get the "Connecting account [name]..." window, and then it just crashes. I'll paste my output for this.

Now, there are a lot of things that look wrong about that. There's not really any good information about what though. hmm

EDIT:
I'd like to point out that I've also tried virtual desktop emulation in the wine settings, as well as starting steam with the -silent switch. Also, I've installed corefonts and vcrun6 via winetricks into this prefix.

EDIT:
This problem has been solved! I was using the Catalyst drivers from AUR, but I only had the x64 version. Please ensure you have 32bit drivers (other than lib32-libgl) if you run into this problem.

Cheers,

Ah, glad you've fixed your issue.
Rest of my original post below:

---

This is all very strange as I get most of those errors too but I eventually connect.

Not sure if this helps but when logging in to steam the "connecting to..." dialogue does temporarily become unresponsive, and in other environments, might prompt me to force close.
But eventually it will connect; roughly 5-10 seconds time.

Keep in mind this is all working for a completely blank 64bit prefix with no vcrun or directx or dotnet. ( this surprised me ).

Also, this is a long shot, but these are the lib32-* packages I have installed on this machine ( which honestly needs a good clean up ); perhaps it'll help:

Re: Stuck with Steam

I've been trying to get Steam to work with the Open Source ATI drivers for a while, but didn't have luck, until now.
The symptoms were very similar to the ones you guys had. Steam just crashes after the Connecting window. Always with the 'fixme:dbghelp:elf_search_auxv can't find symbol in module' in the end. Changing to the proprietary Catalyst drivers helped to make Steam run, but gave me alot other issues, so this wasn't an option.

Today i wanted to increase Wine's debug-output, so I set the WINEDEBUG variable to "+relay" and redirected to output to a file. Apart from a 1GB, and rapidly growing, file Steam suddenly worked! O_O
I don't have the faintest idea why that is, but it works...
But there was still the problem with the size of the output file. So I of course tried redirecting everything to /dev/null. But to accomplish complete confusion, Steam crashed again.
Currently, I'm using the following command to start Steam successfully, without a gigantic output:

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/flob/.wine_steam/ WINEDEBUG=+relay wine Steam.exe 2>&1 | cat &>/dev/null

Only downside with it is, that cat sometimes used up to 8% of CPU...
The Steam-client is a bit laggy, but works. I'm currently downloading/installing games. Flight Control HD works fine already. smile

I hope, this might help you, too. And if you have an idea, _why_ this helps, I'd love to hear it big_smile

Re: Stuck with Steam

This seems to be a bug relating a group of packages that were updated on December 19, 2011. I had four packages update (lib32-libgl, lib32-mesa, lib32-libglapi, lib32-ati-dri) from version 7.11.2-1 to 7.11.2-2. I have downgrade my packages and steam works again.

Re: Stuck with Steam

Heyho Guys,
For Steam its best to use a wine patched with the ole-patch (or just install wine-lol from aur, which is exactly that) and install steam via

 winetricks steam

It is very simple actually! It runs very smoothly on my x86_64 and I do not have any lags using it smile It might be recommended to use an emulated desktop. Every program running in Wine, which uses a taskbar icon, loves to crash on my machine hmm
