[community] kernel26cko and ati-drivers

Hello,

A few people have suggested that the kernel26cko kernel be rolled back to 2.6.11 to better support the ATI drivers. Before even considering this I would like feedback on how well the ati-drivers and kernel are working for people.

Is the performance worse with this driver and kernel combination than previous set ups?

Please vote and comment below.

I'd like to add that I neither own and ATI card or even use this kernel pkg

Yes, the crappy ATI drivers do cause some lockups, but in my case, only in rare cases. I've never had them crash on me during normal usage so I believe its not critical to roll back the kernel just for those occasional freezes.
There really is, in my opinion, no reason to stay behind just because of ATI's shitty work. They'll stabilize the drivers soon enough, I hope, and in the mean time, I find keeping up to date more important.

The ATI Drivers cause me lockups occasional eg passing the cursor of the mouse over and icon on the kde desktop.
I don't know if the patch for the 2.6.12 kernel someone suggested corrects these problems.

Do you get crashes with any other window manager?

I'm running E16 as packaged in the official repos with kernel26cko and ati-drivers. The only problem I have is poor performance in OpenGL games (ie. neverball, foobillard); however, I've never really gotten GOOD performance with said games before, even on older kernels.
I personally see no reason to rollback based on personal experience.

I haven't used another windows manager with arch only kde.

giorgosc - you could have a problem with some kde feature and ati-drivers that doesn't affect people who don't use kde?

No lockups here with Gnome. Nexuiz runs great at 40-60fps with my Mobility Radeon M9 (of course ingame settings are performance oriented).

Hello.

I reformated my Arch Linux Partition and reinstalled without updateing to udev and using gnome only. I will test ati drivers to see if it was a kde only problem.

MMHHh... i don't think it'll be a good idea to rollback everything, ati drivers works with kernel 2.6.12 on my machine without causing freezes or anything, anyway, i've read somewhere they're gonna release new ati drivers at the beginning of september. I hope they're gonna release something good/stable this time

Ah, just because it could be useful for someone...
I'm actually using KDE, i've had a few trouble but i've solved them following what i've read somewhere on this forum... just adding the following demons to run in /etc/rc.conf (in this order):

portmap fam dbus hal

c ya
