Hi,
When I enable KMS for my ATI videocard (I use the normal xf86-video-ati driver), aterm becomes extremely slow and starts flickering (sort of). In any case, it really doesn't work very well. So I turned off KMS (on the kernel line) and then aterm works fine and fast! Good thing, I guess.
But then, when I log out of my WM (fluxbox) I get a vertically lined grey screen (in two shades of grey) and there's nothing to see. I expected the XDM login screen (I always use XDM, and inittab is set to 5)... When I boot I do get the proper XDM login screen; it's only when I log out of fluxbox that the grey screen appears. What I do with this grey screen is changing to tty1 and then back to tty7; after doing this the XDM login screen appears normal again...
When I enable KMS, I don't get this silly XDM problem. But then aterm becomes very ugly and slow...
xdm.log, Xorg.0.log, and errors.log all seem normal. Only Xorg.0.log gives an error (but I don't think that it is relevant):
[ 17.264] (EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed
[ 17.264] (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration disabled
Any ideas what to do?

I solved it. I added myself to the video group, and I added Option "AccelDFS" "off" to the xorg configs. One of those solved it (I don't know which) and KMS works fine without slowing down.
