ArchWiki Migration...At Last!

At long last, I believe the great wiki migration can begin. smile

I have been pulling the Wiki pages from the Arch Wiki:
http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Ph … action=zip

I processed the resultant files (a bunch of sed), then started sifting the results.

I first chopped out the files that had less than 4 lines, then took out as many of the phpwiki specific pages that I could find (the ones for administration, page listing, etc). Next I visually went through and removed as many user pages as I could find. Those will have to be recreated by their respective users.

I took out some pure listing pages that I found...pages like "servers". which only listed all the pages in that category. This will be handled with more "real" categories in the new wiki.

So..after all that..We are left with approx 280 pages. Of which, I am sure there are some of the above that I missed (ie a few user pages, maybe some php wiki pages, etc.).

I am hoping to start an Arch Wiki-Thon next weekend. This week, I will be breaking the pages into chunks of 10 pages. When someone asks to help, they will recieve a chunk. Only when they are done will the chunk be marked as "done". Then the user may request another chunk. If a chunk is partially finished, please notify me of its progress...etc..
I believe this is outlined in the migration-howto I posted earlier. For those that missed it:
http://cactuswax.net/~eliott/ArchLinux/ … howto.html

So..This saturday. If you can help, then please do. It is not brain surgery, but it is very important to the community. This posting will be reproduced on the forum. Information will be provided as to the url of the new wiki to the volunteers, and to the general list this saturday.

I would like to hijack the #archlinux-aur channel for meeting and discussing migration this coming Saturday, as it is usually a pretty slow channel unless we are having a meeting. smile

Plan for Saturday the 22 of July, at 16:30 GMT/UCT in #archlinux-aur, or any time after that.

So..until saturday..Get ready..

Re: ArchWiki Migration...At Last!

correct pzubik. Likely a few people will recieve pages in a language they cannot read. Have no fear! Dont try to create the page for it, just simply notify me (via email would be best) of such a page, and it can be put in a language specific chunk for someone later down the road.

Good questions though. smile

A really hot girl? If so, I can see you having too much to do to migrate a wiki!  8)

Re: ArchWiki Migration...At Last!

As i feared: loads of the intra-wiki links are broken - people created the new pages with underscores instead of spaces and broke loads of links

Between us all, we have migrated about 168 pages so far..
That is around 17 out of 23 chunks done, with 3 being worked on currently, and 3 unassigned.

Many thanks to those listed who showed up, and worked hard. I have been chugging away since around 9am this morning, and I am more than done for  the day..the ol carpul tunnel is flaring up. sad
/me shakes floppy hand at monitor..

If you want to still get involved, try contacting some of those listed above. they know the ropes..
I am off for a bit..

--cactus

The migration of the chunks is complete!
Details here

Remaining issues are listed here

OK, I did the same (up to a point) for my articles. it would be great though if someone who has an idea about the kernel compilation PKGBUILDs to check out the many articles on the subject here (http://www.archlinux.org/archwiki/index … ompilation) and see what could be done to organize that better. Some of those articles probably need to be deleted as now it's very confusing (there is 5 PKGBUILDs there if I'm not mistaken).

Re: ArchWiki Migration...At Last!

please try to avoid using adhoc category pages. Instead, actually associate those pages with a real category.
Just add
[[Category:Kernel]] to the top of your page, and it will automatically be placed into the Kernel category.
For a list of categories, browse via the howto link on the left side of the site.

Ad hoc pages...bad..
using real categories...good.
