I am trying to install Arch onto a flash drive, but after installing without a hitch and rebooting, grub cannot find the kernel and outputs something like
err(hd1,0) cannot find file
error 15
I can give the exact error message if needed

If you install grub on your flash drive (and arch is on the first partition of it) be sure that the "root" entry in your menu.cfg is (hd0,0), not (hd1,0)

Did you add 'usb' to the mkinitcpio.conf HOOKS line?

ok, changing hd1 to hd0 fixed my original problem (thanks matse). unfortunately, now it times out waiting for the flash drive and errors
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sdb1'
and drops into a recovery shell

and that was fixed by putting usb after udev in the mkinitcpio.conf hooks, thanks jimbok
