Solved: After system upgrade Xorg & other devices are not working.

was:
After system upgrade Xorg and other system devices are not working.

The message

gdm-binary[780]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted n.nnn seconds

is displayed several times in terminal followed with

gdm-binary[780]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors.

The log has these suspicous lines:

[  17.833] (++) using VT number 7
[ 17.839] (EE) No devices detected
[ 17.839]
Fatal server error:
[ 17.839] no screens found

Also, the network doesn't come up, so I can't attach the log.
When I booted in fallback mode I saw the message

unknown interface in rc.conf. eth0

I checked dmesg, but saw no errors.

Any troubleshooting tips?

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Solved: After system upgrade Xorg & other devices are not working.

You can copy the log to another computer and post it.
Check your network, what interfaces are being detected etc.

Re: Solved: After system upgrade Xorg & other devices are not working.

Was xorg the only package that was upgraded, or were other packages upgraded as well?

Re: Solved: After system upgrade Xorg & other devices are not working.

@Proofrific - I did a system upgrade, I should have specified.

@Karol -  Thanks, I think I included the relevent lines from Xorg log. No network interfaces are detected other than 'lo'.

Additionally, It appears that USB is not functioning as well.

I plugged a usb drive in and it is not listed with

udisks --enumerate

I was able to copy the log(s) using the installation media.

here's Xorg.0.log

Re: Solved: After system upgrade Xorg & other devices are not working.

Solved:

I had run the upgrade while my boot partition was not mounted at /boot.
Corrected by copying /boot/* to my boot partition.

In the past I saw an error when upgrading the kernel, did I miss it?

edit: the message was displayed.  I saw it in pacman.log
[2011-12-26 20:42] WARNING: /boot appears to be a seperate partition but is not mounted.
[2011-12-26 20:42]          You probably just broke your system. Congratulations.
