Trying to install older Nvidia driver

I'm trying to get composite working.  A pet project, I know.  So obviously, with my Nvidia card, I have to install an older driver, one that works OK and doesn't cause everything to freeze with RenderAccel turned on.  (What's the point otherwise?)  So I've tried making my own package and installing an old 6629 I found on an Arch server.  Both results were the same:

loading package data... done.
checking for file conflicts... done.
installing nvidia... done.
IMPORTANT
==> In order to use the software you have to agree to NVIDIA's license located in
==> /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/LICENSE else please remove this package

==> You have to be in console mode to finish installation!
==> Else it won't install! You have to rerun 'pacman -S nvidia'

Installation starts now ...
FATAL: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.12-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko': No such file or directory
If you need more information about setting up nvidia drivers have a look at:
"http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/How to install NVIDIA Driver"

The current driver installs the nvidia.ko file just fine; why won't it work for the older drivers?

Re: Trying to install older Nvidia driver

Not sure without checking but it may be that 6629 will not work with 2.6.12 -

If anyone still has 6629 in /var/cache/pacman/pkg or PKGBUILD then maybe they can pass it on to you ...

Re: Trying to install older Nvidia driver

Well, I have the package downloaded from an Arch rep, so getting it's not the problem.  But yes, I'm wondering if the packages only work with specific kernels.  That would be strange, though.

Re: Trying to install older Nvidia driver

These video drivers rarely work between kernel revisions due to changes in the kernel interfaces. At one point a patchset was floating around that helped but that was still a few kernel subversions ago.
