i'm thinking of making a switch from gnome to xfce4 and would like to know what file manager, terminal, archive manager (if any) and e-mail client you people are using. i'm asking xfce4 users b/c i'd like to stay gtk if possible.

File Manager: ROX-Filer (xffm is confusing as hell)
Terminal: Terminal
Archive Manager: Command-Line (haven't searched around for this yet)
Email Client: Thunderbird

I'm the same as elastic dog... when im using xfce

file-roller for archives works great with ROX-Filer via drag and drop.

OK,
mail-client: sylpheed-claws(gtk2-version from testing since it is really usable and feels even better that the old gtk1 version), it's the only that configurable GUI client I know. Mainly I'm using muttng now, cuz I need a console program running on the server. The shortcoming of gtk2 sylpheeds is that you're condemende to use MH.
file-manager: ROX - cuz I use it for years, the only nice feature of xffm is the smb browser imho
term: since ALL gtk2 based terms are really memory junkies, I prefer mlterm, which basically has a gtk2 canvas and a gtk2 config-gui, but it uses way less memory, especcially if you run it as a deamon
Archive manager: well, this is where things suck. Sometimes I end up using file-roller(which is heavy gnome) the next in line is midnight commander. Thes are the only apps you can use to browse through your archives. Someone really should write a gtk2 based app for that. Or does onyone know of such a thing? (there is a pygtk based rox-archiver which can be used for zip/unzpping, but not browsing)

Files - mc or cli mostly, although I do use xffstab in xffm every now and then. I'll be having a look at xfe sometime soon, adter seeing it in Archie.
Terminal - Eterm, with a nice transparent theme.
Archives - mc or cli again.
Mail - thunderbird.

Ditto what elasticdog said, but I sometimes use aterm instead of terminal. Both work very well, however.

xarchive, a lightweight gtk2 frontend to packer scripts that features tabbed archives.

haha, initial release 2005-06-10. So it's not really around for a long time...
Anyway, good to know that it is there. Gotta check it out. Thanks for
pointing me.

file manager: Just switched from xffm to rox, but I use the cli most of the time anyway. Also I use gqview for pictures.
terminal: Terminal (the awesome xfce terminal, the only thing that can beat aterm for xfce)
archive manager (you mean a GUI app for .tgz .zip etc. right?): cli here too
e-mail client: sylpheed-claws GTK2

I was using the same setup until I tried GNOME 2.10 and realized that everything I disliked about GNOME in earlier versions was fixed.

What did you dislike about GNOME? I've used GNOME for awhile and now find myself somewhat restless with it.

File manager: nautilus --no-desktop
Archiver:xarchive
Terminal:xfce4 terminal (in pacman as terminal)
Image viewer: gqview
I'm forced to use nautilus because i can't find a file manager with the same features or one that just opens the damn files i tell it to open, rox failed miserably with .ogm and other formats for some reason. xarchive isn't that great either, but it's still 10x better than file roller. file roller = slow as hell.

Yeah, file-roller sucks. I'm new to rox so I can't comment about your troubles with it.

If you don't already know... you have to set the "run action" in rox.
open rox, right click file to be opened, select / File 'filename' / Set Run Action... / enter the command that opens the file

file-roller has more over a really nasty bug, not showing empty directories in archives. This is especially annoyining since it is known for a couple of month now.

Sorry i should of went into further detail. When i set the run action for ogm it makes my .txt files open with my media player. If i set the .txt files to my text editor, then when i try to open a ogm it trys to open it with the text editor. Couldn't find a fix so i had no choice but to use nautilus.
