[SOLVED] Slow ripping on Grip/No DMA on DVD drive

Hi

I am using Grip to rip and encode CDs to mp3. I am only getting 2.0x at the most on the rip, it generally tails off to about 0.8x. I am using cdparapoia as the ripper. I thought that it might be down to dma not being enabled for my dvd drive, so I tried this:

hdparm -d /dev/sr0

and I get this back:

/dev/sr0:
 HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Am I right it thinking it is DMA related? If so, how to I check and enable it? If not, what can I try?

Hi

I have been doing some Googleing and found this link and tried adding ata_piix to the modules array in the rc.conf and then rebooting and that did not help with being able to turn on or check for DMA. I also tried the kernel arguments to no avail. I also found this link on the forum but sdparm -d /dev/sr0 gives me:

I guess that means that udma2 is active on my DVD drive. Guess that it is not DMA not being enabled that is causing my slow CD ripping. Is there any thing else I can post that would help?

Here is a little more information hope it helps. The speed seems to tail off when ripping a CD. It starts at about 2.0x and then tails off to 0.1x. This seems to be when it gets to the later tracks on the CD. 8 or 9 out of 12. I have got the ripper set to paranoia (not paranoia (grip)) with the default settings that grip gives it.

When I've had this sort of problem it has always been the CD rather than the drive. Are the CDs damaged in any way? Are they warped? Are there any off-centre labels? (CDs are written from the centre outwards therefore warping or balance problems will most likely become evident when the higher track numbers are played.)

If you turn off paranoia and error checking and it goes faster, there is nothing wrong. Azleifel is right, EAC took 3 days for one of my bad disks.

I could not see anything wrong with the CDs, on a side note they play fine. I will try a few other CDs (hopefully tonight) and report back. I was also going to try the other ripping option in grip cd2wav (something like that). Thanks for the replies.

Even if you see nothing wrong, the disc may be hard to read and it will take lots of time, as others have said, that is normal. In case of doubt always try with a known good disc.

Your drive is working in udma2 mode, which should be the fastest and correct mode, you can see that in the output of 'hdparm -vI /dev/sr0'

Capabilities:
	LBA, IORDY(can be disabled)
	DMA: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2

and the output of 'hdparm -i /dev/sr0'

UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2

Thanks for the clarification R00KIE. I did think that I was using a known good disc as it played in my CD player but as I am finding out ripping is a different story. When it was running slow I was using 4 different disc but they were all from the same manufacurer (I guess they are as they are both Jimmy Eat World albums). I have since tried it with other CDs and it is fine, so as you have all said it must have been the discs.

On a side note I could not find cdda2wav to install, that is the other option as a ripper in Grip.

For people finding this later. I had the same issue with a brand new disk, I think maybe cdparanoia might be paranoid about speeds. cdrtools provides cdda2wav, and when ripping it was WAY faster for me.
