[SOLVED?] Intel GPU issues with Dell XPS 15: GPU hangs

EDIT: Apparently doesn't happen in kernel 3.1.6 anymore...

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop with Optimus (nVidia/Intel Sandy Bridge graphics), but because I don't use the nVidia card in Linux I have disabled it via acpi_call.

However, the Intel GPU seems to hang randomly (happens mostly after the system has been up for more than 24 hours), then either 3D acceleration dies or the screen goes garbled, eventually requiring a reboot.

Strangely I can't find anything that triggers it: I can spend hours running 3D apps and no ill effects happen. However, it does seem to happen when the system is under heavy memory usage (maybe something is corrupting memory?).

The messages in /var/log/everything.log are:

[148544.517972] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
[148544.518033] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state

libdrm 2.4.29-1

I tried 'i915.semaphores=1' in the GRUB command line, as proposed in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/761065  and this reduces the problem but doesn't solve it completely.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
