Arch Wiki wrote:

Only experienced users who know how to deal with potential system breakage should use it.

The [testing] repository is not for the "newest of the new" package versions. Part of its purpose is to hold package updates that have the potential to cause system breakage, either by being part of the [core] set of packages, or by being critical in other ways. As such, users of the [testing] repository are strongly encouraged to subscribe to the arch-dev-public mailing list, watch the [testing] Repository Forum, and to report all bugs to the bug tracker.

A lot? See e.g. http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … hread.html - not that many, I'd say.
Since the introduction of the signoffs page http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 21972.html the list receives much less e-mails.

Re: to enable testing...

i have one advice for you.

do not cherry pick for testing, all or nothing smile

p.s do not forget about community-testing or multilib-testing as well

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: to enable testing...

Asking why is not discouraging. I really want to know why he wants to use testing, because he didn't give a reason, and because he asked about "precautions".

That's all.

<sarcasm>But no one should ever use [testing], it eats your babies!</sarcasm>

@OP - the wiki on [testing] (as quoted by jasonwryan) contains all you need to know, really. Its rare that your system would break because of [testing] (especially with [staging] now being used) but knowing how to downgrade is a must, at least.

Too sad there is no holding, pinning and backports in pacman, I'd find it funny if you guys had to raise funds and employ ten people to mod this board.
