[SOLVED] Good lightweight audio player that allows multiple instances?

I often want to play audio from two or three files at the same time. Currently, I just run one instance each of several applications (mpd, Audacious, deadbeef, ...). This feels dirty and I would really like to run multiple instances of a single application, but I can't seem to find one that allows it. Any suggestions?

Why do you want to play audio from two or three files at the same time? mplayer can do it.

I like to overlay ambient sounds (fireplace, rain, etc) on top of a song to fill in the quiet moments and thoroughly block out distractions . I've always sort of avoided mplayer for some reason, but I'll look into it. Thanks!

I second the recommendation of mplayer (if that was a recommendation).

You can launch it from the command line or a script to loop the ambient sounds and have it run in the background without having yet more windows taking up space.

I prefer the flexibility of mplayer, but even tiny mpg123 can play multiple audio files at the same time, can loop etc. - as long as it's an MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 stream (layers 1, 2 and 3) :-)

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! mplayer seems like it will do nicely -- the man page is a bit overwhelming, but I probably don't need to know most of it. I have three files playing now, each with its own instance of mplayer, and it's working perfectly. I'll go ahead and mark this as solved, but feel free to continue discussion .

Ah yes, I wonder if anyone ever read the whole mplayer manual; there may some interesting stuff in there, just like in

man xorg.conf wrote:
