Sony Vaio S (A) Problems

Hello,

I have some problems with my Sony Vaio S and I'm a little newbie in this OS.

First of all, when I start Arch it appears some udev errors (something like this):

[   16.369825] Bad LUN (0:2)
[   16.392657] Bad target number (1:0)
[   16.405941] Bad target number (2:0)
[   16.419294] Bad target number (3:0)
[   16.469295] Bad target number (4:0)
[   16.522611] Bad target number (5:0)
[   16.575913] Bad target number (6:0)
[   16.629228] Bad target number (7:0)

Fan control is not going well, fan goes fast even when CPUs are 'stopped' (All 800MHz, nothing doing on PC).
I tried to configure fan control by using lm-sensors.

But sensors output doesn't show me any information about fan speed (only Core temps and Graphic card temp):

$ sensors
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0:  +57.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0:         +57.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:         +55.0°C  (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +56.0°C  (crit = +97.0°C)

radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1:        +55.5°C

Battery life is supposed to be 5-6h. In Windows it's about 4-5 real hours; but in Arch (or any other Linux dist) it's about 2 hours (quite less if you open any IDE, or any 'big' program).
I thought it could be repaired with pcie_acpi=force, but it had no effect.

Now I think the poor battery life is beacuse the two problems I've mentioned (udev + fancontrol fail). In fact, I can see how 'battery time left' goes down when the fan speeds up (for no reasson).

Can anyone help me?
Thanks a lot.

Re: Sony Vaio S (A) Problems

Hello

Pretty much the same problem here on my new HP pavilion dv6-2110ez.

I think the temperature/fan problem here has something to do with the hybrid graphics technology, so i'll have to check that out..
But with the Bad Lun error messages I have no idea what this means or where to start..

Greetings

Re: Sony Vaio S (A) Problems

If you have hybrid graphic then I suggest you disable the discrete card and use the integrated one. You can use 'vgaswitcheroo' or better yet use an acpi call (check acpi_call-git in AUR) to completely turn off your discrete card if any. Also, you may want to look into laptop-mode-tools and/or implement the suggestions 'powertop' has for your lappy. You may also want to read this

I don't think that your battery life is somehow related to those error messages but the abnormal state of your fan is.

Hope that helps.

Take care

Re: Sony Vaio S (A) Problems

Thanks

I just followed the instructions in the Hybrid graphics wiki and my core temperatures are dropping now to around 41°C and still dropping, where they were around 50-60°C before... very nice !

I used vgaswitcheroo. Can I use acpi call at the same time ? How should I combine these two ?
Anyway I'm already happy with that temperature drop. 38°C now.

The Bad Lun messages remains at boot, what do they mean ?

Greetings

I used 'vgaswitcheroo' when I was switching between gpu's, but then actually realized that I don't need the ati card because the intel hd has been working just fine, lower power consumption, far lower heat so now I'm using acpi_call to poweroff the discrete card on system startup.

You should really want to google this, because there are numerous answers already in place => https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1022581
