Kernel 3.1.9 does not boot (x86_64)

Updated to new linux kernel (package linux-3.1.9-2) yesterday. Upon switching on today, the system would not boot.

GRUB loaded the kernel & initial RAMDISK and displayed the message about unpacking the kernel image and the result was 'OK', then nothing.....

Using install CD and linux 3.1.6 package from the mirror server, I have reverted back to a working system.

Any clues as to what is wrong?

A few experiments later......

The previous package, linux-3.1.9-1 works fine. I assume this is a packaging change to bump the -1  to -2?

I have also tried rebuilding the -2 package via 'abs'. Still fails.

Perhaps downloading from another mirror will solve the difficvulty?

I doubt the package is at fault - as I said before I built it for myself.

From my study of the package history - there is some mention of a 'libarchive' change, though I couldn't see exactly what this was. I notice libarchive  is currently marked as obsolete, perhaps when the updated package is pased to 'core' (currently in testing) the problem will go away?
