Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

My reasons for joining:
At the moment my laptop can not handle the loads(Well it can but it lags every so often) put on by gnome 3 and its close cousins. This does not mean I dislike mint (which I came from and ubuntu before that) it just means it was time to evolve or fall off the bandwagon (So to speak) I have tinkered with arch a few times before (ArchBang and just Arch itself) so I'm not a total noob so to speak, but I am here to learn something new. After all that is what linux is at heart, a very personal learning experiance, and as such you need a very personal OS that being arch.

Also a friend of mine from my ubuntu days (Before mint) convinced me to try it out. (MutantTurkey if he runs by that name here. Which I would guess he does)

So, hello new friends smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi,
I'm yet another who's been using Ubuntu for a few years and finally decided to switch to something leaner. After reading a lot about various distros I decided to give Arch a try. (Partly attracted by lots of people saying they felt they learned a lot more about Linux this way. It seems to be true. And by the incremental upgrade model instead of re-install every 6 months or year model. And the more minimalist philosophy. And now I'm also impressed to see how active the forums are and how many users are registered, a good sign.)

I have just installed Arch as a trial experiment on an Asus 900 we mostly just use for travel and am now adding packages and tweaking it. Had some weird install issues with the SSD but got them solved OK. (I was doing the 32 heads and 32 sectors business for the SSD and ran into the weirdness of those getting reset, a strange problem mentioned on the SSD wiki page which helped me solve it, and I also had a problem with ambiguousness of my 16 GB drive being sdb or sda... in the Arch setup, it was sdb, but when booting the installed Arch, it is sda. Not sure why it took me longer to figure out than it should have...)

All in all, going pretty well so far. The forum, the wiki, and the web in general are so far answering my questions pretty much. I'm hoping things continue to go well, and if so we'll install Arch on our main machines, probably with LXDE (which we've already been trying out on Ubuntu as a lighter replacement for Gnome).

Reasons for joining:

So I'm really excited about the new Raspberry Pi coming out soon (http://www.raspberrypi.org -- if you haven't seen this yet, you should!). It is initially going to officially support three Linux distributions: Fedora, Debian, and ... (drum roll please!) Arch. Well, I was pretty sure I didn't want to use Fedora or Debian, having had bad experiences with both in the past. So, I decided to give Arch a whirl.

To say I'm impressed would be an understatement. For me, it combines the flexibility of Slackware with the package management power of something like Ubuntu. The documentation in the wikis is outstanding too.

Not only am I going to install Arch on my raspberry pi when I get one, I'm going to replace my PC's OS (currently Kubuntu) with Arch.

So, you have Yet Another Noob in your midst. Hello, peoples!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello world!

I'm new to the forum but have been using linux for several years now. Some time ago I discovered arch and from then on have been addicted to it. Being obsessed with having an operating system 100% suitable to my needs, I spend too much time of my life adjusting this and that... But you know, life is too short for Ubuntu smile However, I do have a functional relationship, suck it nerdhaters!

By the way I'm from Germany and my English is a disaster (that's why this post was written by my lovely girlfriend...) So sorry for any mistakes...

Looking forward to having a good time here!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi Archfriends. After realizing that I had been using using the Arch Wiki so often for help while using other distros when it came time to put an OS on my ssd after a long and drawn out thought process (2 minutes) I realized I might as well just install Arch. Everything's been good, hope one day to be able to give back to this great community.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Just installed Arch yesterday, dropping by to say Hi!
I see this is a vibrant community. Arch is a great distro as I'm still discovering every minute I'm using it.
Been using Ubuntu as my main distro, but also tried most of the major distributions. Arch is the best and most customisable so far. I was very surprised to see I got a bare system, which was exactly what I needed. Now I have everything I need the way I need it plus a bit of understanding of how linux works.

Thank you developers and community. Hope this will be a positive experience!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all!

Karyn Roberts from New Mexico USA here - dropping in to say hi and that "Archlinux Rocks!" wink  I've been a UNIX Admin professionally since 1990 - Solaris, IRIX - then to Linux w/RedHat, CentOS, Fedora - Debian, after all it paid the bills - but for myself I was not enjoying running it at home - don't get me wrong, better smeg than dead - and I do still own quite a few SGI boxes - but for me? I chose Archlinux - totally bringing the 'fun' back into running Linux - probably hitting the same roadblocks that everyone else did but trudging my way through quite well - and enjoying the hell out of it!  Getting up early, staying up late just hacking away like the good ol'days ...

Hope to participate often!

Cheers,
Karyn

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello, everyone.

My name is Mario Lawrence. I'm a Arch Linux newbie, from Florida, but living in Georgia.
The Compiz Effects videos on Youtube are what first attracted me to Linux...

I was watching "The Money Masters" on Youtube, and somehow stumbled into Compiz. So it was like, "Oh wow! The end of the world- Oooh, pretty lights."

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS shortly after, and was suddenly exposed to the "light" of open-sourced software, the principles behind the Linux Kernel. I saw how much of a... blessing... Linux actually is. I felt it was an important obligation to learn how to use it fully.

A year later I'm here. I always heard of "Arch Linux" users before. I was ready to grow past Ubuntu, and learn my Linux system a bit more.

Honestly, I picked Arch Linux simply because it sounded cooler than the rest. I mean, come on, just say it "Arch Linux". Sounds nice doesnt it?
I'm not a Linux user.... I'm an Arch Linux user.
Like, im not an angel.. im an Archangel.
You FEEL awesome. Arch really boosts the ego. lol

Installing Arch Linux to an external usb hard drive also endows one with some bragging rights.
Apparently, the Arch ISOS on the official page havent been updated in a year "2010.05" ring a bell to anyone? xD

It wasn't hard, just time-consuming, but it felt like a real accomplishment to install Arch Linux. on usd hdd.
When I first punched in "startx", and I saw those skeleton terminal windows pop up.... I swelled with pride, and roared like godzilla (im serious, i did)

Huge thanks to all contributors to the Arch Linux Wiki.

I'm running the lastest kernel, with Arch Linux on KDE 4.7.4... and it is smooth, fast, and beautiful.

I'm an environmental science major, but im looking to learn Linux to be a professional Linux system administrator as well. Fedora 16 is installed on my sda.
I figure its the closest thing to RHE, besides CentOS, but I dont have a LAN at home.. In any case, I love challenges, and I love learning.

Again, my name is Mario Lawrence and I AM an Arch Linux User.

Rise and Evolve

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello All

I've been changing distro's every few weeks or so since last summer. I switched to mint from ubuntu, then to arch after my friend told me about it. then I tried the new ubuntu(11.04), then back to arch a week later. then I stuck with arch for about three weeks, then tried fedora. I really didn't like gnome 3, so I went back to ubuntu, thinking it would be nice not having to configure everything myself. It wasn't. so back to arch. Then I tried archbang, but it didn't set up correctly. So, back to arch. Then I tried Sabayon, then openSUSE, and finally, back to arch.

At least by now, though, I've pretty much memorized how to set up arch, and can have a working system in about 10 minutes.

So, I figure it's time I joined the forums, so, yeah.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

Name's Keller, I've been a Linux user for about 3 years now (Started with Ubuntu 8.11). I have come a very long way since then and with the talk of Unity in Ubuntu I made the Arch leap and haven't looked back.

I have used Arch almost exclusively for about a year now. I most of all love the rolling release and the fundamental Linux approach it offers. It really stresses the modularity and versatility Linux was built upon.

I now recommend Arch to all of my Linux friends (Though most crack Gentoo and LFS jokes every time I do).

So, thank you to everyone for having me and I look forward to being an active member of the community.

Hello Everyone,

I've actually been using Arch now for nearly a couple years on two different machines.  It all started with a file server and then later installed it on my desktop as well.  What I enjoy most about arch is that it starts plain and technically simple.  Like if Linux were a single scoop of vanilla ice cream, I'd imagine it being Arch. Then you can take that and add a few sprinkles or turn it into giant sundae.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi Everybody,

I've just made the move to Arch about an hour ago. I was an ubuntu user since 2007 (working environment. desktop & server) but have also tried various other distros like Fedora, Debian Stable, Mint...

A friend told me about the advantages of Gentoo a couple of weeks ago. So I started investigating and ended up on the Arch website. I'm not much of a geeky-nerdy-hacker but I love to be able to keep things simple. That's why I decided to give Arch a real test-drive. No virtualbox, real hardware, real problems, real ups and downs.

So, now that I got my Lenovo Thinkpad X220, I just dived into the documentation and started (removing Wintendo) installing Arch. Guess a lot of learning and hacking will be involved in the next couple of days, weeks, months. I'm curious where that plain root promt is going to take me.

Update: So far I have learned, that freedom comes with plenty of responsibility and that I can solve about every (Arch) problem myself.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone.

Short history -- computer geek from way back, built Z80 and 6800 machines in the 80s (CP/M!) then worked at a large software company and got completely burned out. Recently started using Linux and moved quickly to #! for its simplicity. Got my feet wet and my confidence up. Heard a lot about Arch and finally decided to see if it was as difficult as everyone says. I now have it running on two machines with no major problems. The install instructions and wiki are great. I like Arch because I get to decide exactly what I have in my system and I learn something new every time I start it up.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello All,

I've been a frequent visitor to the Arch Linux forum for probably 2 years now and I've decided that I really should become a contributing member.  My linux experience began with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.  I started because my desktop couldn't handle Vista anymore and Linux started coming up in my Google and YouTube searches.  I loved hardy but I liked the future releases less and less.  I went from Ubuntu to Xubuntu, I then started experimenting with lots of other distros.  Arch was intimidating at 1st for all the usual reasons but after over a dozen test installs in Virtualbox I was ready to become an Arch user full-time.

As my interest in linux developed I became much less interested with the preinstalled software, the DE and WM, etc.  I found that I was much more interested in the package manager, the community (forums), and wikis.  Which makes Arch Linux an obvious choice for me I think.  I've left Arch a few times since I first started using it but after a half dozen times of typing "pacman -S xyz" in a Linux Mint terminal I've come to realize that Arch is my Linux distro.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Arch community!

After a year or two of distro-hopping, I realized that my problem was that none of the distributions I used provided me with everything I wanted. I wanted a distro that was fast (like Lubuntu), but good-looking (like Bodhi Linux with the Enlightenment window manager) and always up-to-date with the applications and packages. I realized that this would mean work. I liked the idea of Arch Linux from the moment I was read about it years ago, but was always scared of by having to configure almost everything by myself. Last week I decided I'll give it a try.

After learning a lot in just one day and another one or two days of fighting with automounting and font sizes, I'm sitting here with Arch Linux with E17, everything doing what I want it to do, and for the first time in ages I don't feel any urge to change something (only maybe a package here, a slight change to a configuration file or a theme there).

I'm happy, and I hope I'll live that way ever after.

So after I told you this truly heart-breaking story, there's not much more to say. In real life I'm an engineer specialized in automation & fieldbus communication.

Thank you for your patience.
