Sound quality nose dives when using earbuds with built in mic

I connected my s5i, and also my apple earbuds with the mic, and with both of them the sound that comes out sounds awful. A little bit louder on the right ear than the left, and sounds like a tin can. I connected it through the front headphone jack and the back headphone jack, both have the same issue. I connect a standard headphone with 2 insulating black strips instead of three, and it sounds perfect.

Software or hardware issue?

Apple hardware is different. The jacks probably won't work properly in a normal stereo headphone plug.

Hardware issue. You can try pulling out the jack for just a little bit (like a few mm), which sometimes works.

Wow, I never knew Apple made such a thing. So it physically fits in a standard headphone jack but has an extra contact? This must confuse a lot of people. What is it designed to be used with?

Well, the additional contact is necessary for the mic...
Normally they should "line up" such that they just work everywhere. And indeed my samsung earplugs work well everywhere I tested it:
