Sound distortion

Whenever I play a .wav file in linux, it is highly distorted during all playback. I have a Hercules Muse XL and am using the snd-cmipci module, along with the snd-xxxx-oss modules. I can play audio CDs using cdcd without any problems. Any ideas?

Re: Sound distortion

Turn down the Master volume and turn up the volume on the speakers... sound cards can't always pump out *clear* sound when at full.

Re: Sound distortion

No, not the solution. I put it down to the lowest possible volume that's audible and it still sounds very distorted.

Re: Sound distortion

Did you try turning down the master and the pcm? (having one up and the other down) or having them both at medium?

That's the only thing I can think of... if that's the distortion that you're talking about (when it sounds like bad headphones being turned up really loud).
