I am using fbsplash, and between grub2 menu and X, the screen stays blank. However the splash screen does show up when the system is shutting down for a reboot. I followed the setup instructions at <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fbsplash>, and my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf has:
MODULES="i915"
# ...
HOOKS="base fbsplash udev autodetect pata scsi sata uresume filesystems usbinput"
I also tried with fbsplash after autodetect, and that didn't fix the problem.
I generated grub2 config with:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet loglevel=3 logo.nologo console=tty1 splash=silent,fadein,fadeout,theme:arch-banner-icons"
dmesg shows a segfault with fbsplash, and a few lines about fb0:

[ 0.661617] fb0: VESA VGA frame buffer device

I am using linux 3.1.9-2, xf86-video-intel 2.17.0-2, fbsplash 1.5.4.4-7. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I did an upgrade, ran mkinitcpio a few times, and now the splash screen works on boot too. I didn't figure out what was causing it to fail in the beginning though, sorry.

Try enabling KMS. It worked for me with my intel chipset.
