Gnome Errors

After running 'pacman -S gnome-extra', installing seems to take place but at the end I get: 'no packages were upgraded'.

When I run gnome: xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session, I get:

http://gmjones.org/tv/IMAG0139.jpg

Reference is made to paths. Where can I find them?

Re: Gnome Errors

It would be nice to know what kind of error caused 'no packages were upgraded' thing.

Is your system up to date? Post the output of 'pacman -Q linux'.

Edit: Do you have gnome-session installed? Post the output of 'pacman -Q gnome-session'.

'pacman -Q linux gives' '3.0.3-1

'pacman -Q gnome-session' gives 'package 'gnome-session was not found.'

I was following instructions to install gnome and it was at the end of what seemed like an installation process that I got the message.

Re: Gnome Errors

You should be using linux 3.1.9-2. Is there a reason why you're using an old kernel?

I've never used gnome, but you simply don't have that package installed. Can you post the whole pacman output so that we know what happened?

One thing I've found since moving to arch is that error messages are useful.  For example, this one says that no packages were upgraded.  To translate that to plain English: no packages were upgraded! ;o)

There was almost certainly an error message before this message at the end of your pacman output.  Perhaps it had something to do with mtab, or perhaps with a conflicting file, or something along those lines.  That error message will also, most likely, tell you exactly what to do.  But feel free to post it here to get the plain English translation.

I'm using that version based on following the instructions!

I'll post the pacman output later...

Re: Gnome Errors

Please post the link to said instructions too.

Edit: Ah, I think I already know why you're using that particular version - you haven't updated your Arch install yet. This kernel version was included on the 2011.08.19 iso.

Arch is a rolling release distro. It means that basically every day there are some new packages that you  can install. How often you want to update is your business but IMHO it's advisable to do at least weekly updates.
You should always update your whole system before installing new packages. Can you please do it now?

Re: Gnome Errors

After reinstalling and testing my network connection, when I type pacman -Syu, I get the errors shown. Same with pacman -Syy

Why do you have a DAEMONS-doubleline? Delete the last one.

That did the trick!

When I input 'pacman -Q linux', I get: 3.0.3-1 and as mentioned above, I'm supposed to be using 3.1.9-2. I assumed 'pacman -Syu' would update things but despite giving no errors, it hasn't changed/updated my version.

chome4, please edit your post.
When pasting code, please use [ code ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

What is the bbcode that gives the small fonts you used in your example? I don't see one in the link.

Do I have to enclose every line in pacman.conf or can I enclose the whole block?

Click 'Quote' link in the bottom right corner of my post to see how I have done it.
Use it for the whole block.
