Building an MP3 machine (LVM and special keys Q)

I'm currently painting the case of my Celeron 466 I'm intending to use as an MP3-player. I want to Arch (DUH! wink) on it and put 3 hard drives in it full of music. I'd like to control it (the audio part) with the multimedia keys on my SK-2500 keyboard.

I'm aware I can use those keys in X fairly easy with xev and Fluxbox. However, is it possible to use those keys without X? I've looked at lineakd but it has x-server as a dep. Since I won't actually hook a screen up to it, I don't really see the need for X running.

My second question is: I've got 3 discs and I'd like to use them as one big disks. I was thinking about using LVM for that. Unfortunately I'd need an initrd to be able to boot /. I could also use a linear RAID-array. What would be easier?
One of those 3 discs is already filled up with music and so far I've been mounting it read-only, which gives me the feeling it's less likely to fsck up my files. Can I create LVM-volumes with one or more discs mounted as read-only?

~/.inputrc might be able to help you with the keyboard shortcuts.....

i think you can even load linux on them... but make sure your audio tracks are not AAC's.

iPods cost money. I already have the hardware.

I've tried "showkey" and some of my multimediakeys do indeed show up as one keycode. I've got a bunch of keys that don't give me any keycode when I press them tho. How would the Windows keyboard driver know if I press them or not?
