Complete, frequent and random freezes since update.

I'm running a miniITX Zotac board with Intel Dual Core and nVidia ION (GeForce 9400) on it. It tends randomly freeze even few times a day since an update, currently running 3.1.7.1 x64 kernel. I have those issues pretty much since i installed 64 bit Arch over a month ago, it freezed as well on 2.6.x kernel, but not as frequent as now. I've been using a 32 bit Arch on that boards few years ago and as far as i remember it worked fine. There's nothing in logs regarding that issue, freeze happen randomly. Sometimes, when they're nothing being done on computer like overnight, sometimes while listening to music (it loops then), sometimes when simply browsing the net. I'm using a nvidia drivers from pacman, gnome 3 as desktop environment and pci-e intel network card here. Don't have much software running in background, there's Chromium, Plex server, evolution and transmission. Out of ideas here, don't even know how to find what can be faulty.

Please run a Live Linux distro from CD or USB first, stress the computer a bit in that OS and see if you still get freezes. If yes, you have a hardware (not OS) problem, if no, come back here first of all pasting your "dmesg" to a pastebin somewhere.

I don't think it's hardware failure related, I'm having the exact same problem here, only my system is a Lenovo N500 laptop:

Intel Core2Duo T5800
nVidia GeForce 9300 M GS (nouveau driver)
3.1.7-1 kernel x64
KDE 4.7.4

One time my music player continued playing for at least half a minute until I shutdown my laptop, last time a flash video stopped playing after a few seconds.
Is dmesg really helpful here? It only displays the output since last reboot which - as I'm able to even type 'dmesg' - has not failed yet, right?

I'm "glad" somebody else got this problem as well, I felt a bit lost since it seems to be quite hard to track down.

I did full update again today, so far so good but next time it happen i'll try to boot from USB and check on live version instead of installed system. Personally, i have flash hardware acceleration completely disabled as it caused similar issues here over a month ago. I'm using nVidia drivers instead of noveau so if both mine and EdgarButan issue has the same cause i doubt it's the one.

This time, I had a process table open and by the time of the crash, there was no process with an unusually high CPU or RAM usage.

Have you tried to run "memtest" from the Arch (or any Live Linux CD), or USB stick?

I just ran it, pass complete, 0 errors. I don't have time right now for 10 cycles as recommended in the wiki but considering the frequency of these crashes (at least once a day), at least one error would have had to occur, right?

I am having a similar problem with freezes. My keyboard freezes for up to 30 seconds, often at :00 and :30, but it can happen at anytime. I have a 9800GT card. I ran a copy of FaunOS to test if it is a hardware problem. It is not. The system works without delays. Is this a driver probem? I have the 290.10-1 driver installed. The keyboard freeze is particularly sensitive to the Control key, backspace, and the arrow keys (evdev driver). Typing this message, there were three freezes of 30 seconds.

enable sshd make sure it works.

ssh into the system when it freezes, and capture all relevant logs.

then reboot gracefully issuing the reboot command.

post back the logs.

In my case, when it freezed i couldn't ssh to it. It was dead for good. Still, after update so far everything's good, didn't hang yet.

After all, my HDD died. I guess it could be related to that issues as well even tho previous tests claimed it's fine. Gonna wait for replacement and do full reinstall to see what happen next.

No, it hasn't. Was working fine for over a week since the last update, it freezed when HDD died and woke me up with weird noise during the night.

I realize that I am not addressing the question asked in this posting, but since I responded I thought it appropriate to finish. After the last update (yesterday) the entire problem disappeared. Among the updates were nvidia and kernel26. I have no idea why it was broken or why it works now.

Got my replacement hdd back, did fresh reinstall and problem still occurs. I think it might be related to high io/hdd activity. I have this system for about 2 weeks. Started playing with sickbeard and sabnzbd to get my missing episodes and fill library yesterday. It froze twice already. Once, when copying few GB files to my NAS, second time today in the morning, most likely during unpacking files by sabnzbd. Again, there's nothing in logs nor on the screen while it freeze, can't ssh to it either. Before i started with sabnzbd whole system worked fine with minimal load (FTP server with minimal activity and daily web browsing under Gnome3 - default install).

Since my drive died i've been running that PC with Ubuntu Live from USB drive for over 2 weeks. I copied over 1 TB of data from dying disk to my backup one and then back. I haven't encountered any issues during those 2 weeks. Everything worked 24/7. I also did full memory test as suggested before, they're fine.

My current install were fully updated with pacman last weekend, currently running 3.2.5.1-ARCH SMP x86_64 kernel, Gnome3, samba, cpufreq, sshd, sickbeard, sabnzbd and couchpotato running in background. Completely out of ideas.

// Update:

Moved to Ubuntu over a week ago, running older kernel 3.0.0-16-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP and similar software installed. So far not a single freeze.
