[SOLVED] SecondLife Media

OK, I don't actually use SecondLife, but I do run an OpenSim server, which amounts to the same technology, and more to the point, the same viewers.

I've managed to get a viewer going (other than Imprudence which is native 64 bit) with proper gfx acceleration and audio, but I'm still missing streaming media. I have gstreamer 32 bit libs installed (after some playing since pacman complained about the version containing invalid characters - a fix to the sed string for the version got them installed), but I still don't have streaming media. Ambient sounds etc are now working. I'm guessing I'm still missing a lib32 pacakage, but I have no idea which. I have alsa, oss, gstreamer (32 bit) libs installed. What else do I need from lib32 on a 64 bit OS to get streaming media working.

Note - I can get vlc to play the stream, but that's just a pain. The viewer thinks it's playing, but there isn't any sound.

Try installing lib32-alsa-lib and lib32-alsa-plugins.

Also, if the viewer of your choice is Phoenix, it is possible it is its own internal issue. I haven't used it in a while, but I remember having streaming issues. I recommend Cool VL Viewer, which I plan to add to the AUR once I figure some issues out.

I already have both installed, and I use Cool VL. Shame there isn't a native 64 bit build anywhere

Then, I take it you have already installed all lib32 dependencies of phoenixviewer's?

Also, Cool uses FMOD by default. I always turn it back to OpenAl, but perhaps that is the reason you can't get streaming.

No good. I used your list as a template for a script to install the whole bunch. If I setup the viewer to use OpenAL I get no sound at all. If I use FMOD I get ambient sounds and interface sounds, but no streaming. The viewer thinks it's playing the stream, but there's just nothing. This is driving me nuts. Maybe I should try removing alsa and go OSS, see if that helps? (note - no pulseaudio here, and there never will be.)

Just an update, and maybe not an ideal solution, but switching to oss4 has got me full sound, including streaming media. I'll see how I get on with other audio applications now.

EDIT:

Marking this as solved. the other applications that need audio seem to be working just fine with OSS (and it may just be me, but the audio quality sounds a little better).

Three days of installing stuff, removing stuff and tweaking stuff and I still don't know what the problem with alsa was, but now I don't care

Hmm, I think I do. Henri, the creator of Cool, is pro-OSS to the core and he encourages people to use it. Perhaps I'll give it a shot as well :-)
