System:
AMD Phenom II X2 545 on Gigabyte M61PME-S2P (nVidia MCP61 chipset) and 4 GB DDR2 RAM. ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card.
On a fresh x86_64 Arch install, Catalyst 11.11 with kernel 3.1.9-2 and Catalyst 11.12-1 with kernel 3.2.1-1 just turns the screen black, and then monitor behaves as if system is shut down. The open source drivers seem to be working fine when catalyst is not installed.
I have installed X and wmii, also checked with twm, xterm and xclock.

with Catalyst 11.11 you might have to check if it supports latest xorg version. (maybe you need to downgrade xorg). Did you follow the ati wiki? blacklisted radeon (http://www.archlinux.org/news/kmod-repl … nit-tools/), created a xorg.conf with aticonfig, put fglrx in rc.conf, nomodeset to kernel line, and of course rebuild it after kernel update?

On my first run through with Arch I had no end of problems with catalyst, and even on debian I had to work at it.
On arch I managed to get catalyst running well (even with the supposedly unsupported 3.2 kernel) by installing the Arch base, followed by xorg and my DE (xfce in my case) - and then catalyst before I moved on to anything else. I can't explain why, but it installed without complaining about dependencies, and is now working just fine.
I don't know if it's an option for you, but if a clean install could be on the cards, try installing catalyst as early as possible during the installation build.
EDIT: Oh, you have checked that nomodeset is added to your linux boot line?
