Hello everyone,
at the moment I'm tagging my pictures I made with my digital
camera with digikam. Some of the pictures are in jpg format
and other are in raw format. I saw when I tag a jpg picture the
IPTC metada are updated, but it's not the case if I tag a picture
in the raw format. I have the following idea: when I tag, I also want
to modify the metadata such that if I give the pictures to somebody or
if I change my software for managing my pictures I can extract the tags
from the metadata. I want to have the possibility to change the software
I use without tagging a second time each picture. I don't know if it's important
but the raw format I use is .cr2 from canon.
I saw that digikam can edit the metadata from raw picture but it's still
experimental. Does anybody already used that option? Does it works well ?
I read it can be a bad idea to edit the metadata from raw format and if
something go wrong it's possible to lose the pictures.
Or do you have another idea to tag pictures in the raw format and
edit the metadata such that the picture retain the tags if you change
the software or give the pictures to somebody else ?

So it seems not a lot of people have this problem. So I'll
ask my question in an other way. How do you tag your pictures
to be not software dependant ? I mean: if you change
the software for managing your pictures you don't lose your tags ?
If you have a solution, what file format are you using ?

I've found a solution! So I have to use the xmp metadata. For example in digikam
I can activate the option "Read metadata from xmp sidecar files" and I choose
for writing metadata "Write to XMP sidecar only". So a file .xmp will be associated with
each pictures and I don't have to modify the raw file. But I can tag my pictures and I
have some information about the tag in the file .xmp. I only have to be careful to also
backup the .xmp files.
So I can continue to sort my pictures and perhaps it can help somebody!
