Is the new kmod system dependent on kernel 3.2.x?

Or can I install the new kmod and still run kernel 3.1.x?

I am currently running kmod with the 3.1 kernel.
I had a horrible problem with udev hanging on boot, that seems to be more related to the 3.2 kernel then kmod or udev.
