[RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

Laptop:
ASUS F5 Entertainment System (PRO50N)
Turion 64 x2 CPU
Mobile NVIDIA GeForce 7000M.

Gnome3 Fallback Mode
Proprietary NVIDIA Drivers
Kernel 3.2.1-1
------------------

Hi.

I updated my laptop today after not updating for a while and now I'm having quite a bit of trouble with gnome3.

Gnome itself loads normally at first glance. But then you begin to see things aren't quite right. The first problem is that there is no mouse cursor at all. You can see different things being highlighted when you hover over them, and you can click on things as per normal but there is no cursor.

Second problem is that if you open an application (e.g. Firefox, Terminal, VNC), it opens full screen and covers both of the panels. In addition, there are no close, minimise or maximise buttons visible any more.

The third problem is when you click the minimise to desktop button on the panel an error appears stating:

"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager"

Things I've tried:

Rolled Dbus back to version 1.4.14 from 1.4.16 - Rebooted; No change.
Reinstalled Gnome completely - Rebooted: No change

The only error in /var/log/everything.log is:

WARNING: Failed to start app: Unable to start application: Failed to execute child process "volwheel" (no such file or directory)

No errors in /var/log/error.log.

Renamed .config, .gconf and .gconfd to allow new ones to be created. Started xserver. I now get the default gnome3 background and a retro style 'X' shaped cursor, but no panels load. This is probably due to gnome3 loading without fallback mode which has never worked on my laptop. If I try to re-enable fallback mode from the console using the command:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name 'gnome-fallback'

I get an error outputted stating:

** (process:2488): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=e968348bcb1af19a68dbb72400000b51 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here?

If you need any more information let me know.

Thanks for any replies!

Scott.

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

Sounds more like an issue with X11 than Gnome3 itself.

Can you post your DAEMONS from /etc/rc.conf and the results of the following command:

pacman -Q | grep xorg

Also, do you get any errors if you manually start X11 at boot-up with startx?

I can run other window managers, just not Gnome. At the minute im running openbox and everything seems to work fine here.

My daemons are:

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

There are lots of errors when starting X. Is there any way to copy them so I can paste them here?

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

xorg logs in /var/log. please use code text instead of quote when pasting log files, it makes the thread a lot more readable (you can edit your posts).

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

/var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't seem to show the errors that i'm seeing when I type "startx" thats why I asked if there was any way to copy it.

Here is the tail end of my xorg log:

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

Ah ok, I always thought it is logging those into /var/log. Maybe it got rotated or something?

From what version of gnome where you updating? That log looks fine to me. You could try without xorg.conf and/or with gdm - sorry, no idea what is going on there.

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

Don't know if its of any use either but during startup when it's loading all the modules and daemons etc. I get

"Loading User-Specified Modules [FAILED]"

Which I have never seen until this problem started.

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @iptables !network !netfs dbus hal crond acpid @cpufreq !@mpd @wicd)

Is your system completely updated again? You can try modprobing them manually to see which one fails.

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

"Loading User-Specified Modules [FAILED]"

Check your /etc/rc.conf for the MODULES section.  One of the modules in there is causing the error.  You can manually test each module with modprobe
Example:

# modprobe vboxdrv

If nothing returns, then that means the module ran successfully.

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

This may be a dumb question, but your user is in the "video" group in /etc/group, correct?

Re: [RESOLVED] Gnome Updated - Functionality Lost...

Hello, sorry its taken so long to return a reply, i've been really busy with work.

I've managed to fix this problem with the help of Kane^. The failed user modules weren't causing a problem with gnome starting, these were just something to do with the cpufreq modules i had specified.

To fix the issue I had to reinstall a module called "libltd" as soon as this was reinstalled gnome booted fine.

Got a few other warning messages that I need to resolve but at least I can get into gnome now!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

Scott.
