Extra sound card no longer blacklisted after update, causing no sound

I'm using ALSA and Pulse Audio, and an ASUS Xonar Essence ST sound card.  My ATi video card also has a sound card, which goes to my monitor using HDMI.  While the ATi card is in use, the ASUS card doesn't function, so previously I've blacklisted it with

echo blacklist snd_hda_intel | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Ever since I updated yesterday, the blacklisting has been ignored, despite the line "blacklist snd_hda_intel" being in my modprobe.d/blacklist file.
Did some recent update change the purpose of /etc/modprobe.d?  Could I either properly get it to blacklist, or get the ASUS card to be used properly without blacklisting anything?

As far as I remember, all files in /etc/modprobe.d/ must end with .conf extension.

"I exist" is the best myth I know..
