Or he could just burn a live CD (Ubuntu?) and see if the same error pops up with it. If it does, then maybe it is hardware, if not, then it is likely a bug and he should consider filing it. Have you done a google search for the bad behavior plus the model/make of your video card? That might bring up an already filed bug report or one that is similar enough that you can tack your problem onto it (and maybe even find a work around that worked for someone else).
I used SysResCd (Gentoo-based livecd) and here's my xorg.log;
http://pastebin.com/Qh31M6P3
As you can see I do not have modeline loop as in Arch - only these 2 modelines at the end;
[ 50.839] (II) intel(0): Modeline "1366x768"x0.0 69.30 1366 1404 1426 1436 768 771 777 803 -hsync -vsync (48.3 kHz)
[ 50.839] (II) intel(0): Modeline "1366x768"x0.0 46.20 1366 1404 1426 1436 768 771 777 803 -hsync -vsync (32.2 kHz)
And these are okay, they were always there... :-)
So what do you guys think, time for a bug report?

I have the same issue on a Lenovo T400. Slow starting of X and multiple modeline entries in the Xorg log.
