Well I have a quite annoying situation here. My Nvidia 8800gt started overheating. not sure since when it has done that since I can't recall the last time I tried to play any games with it. yesterday I did and the result wasn't good. has some update messed up my graphics card or do I just need to finally agree to the fact that it's useless piece of hardware and get a new one...
ADD:
Looks like the latest played game was on 27th and latest update on 22nd and it didn't cause problems back then. Oh snap...
ADD 2:
Played around with some controls and found a way to keep it low enough. Perhaps it is not the graphics that's crashing... >.< Concider this solved.

I found these all over my dmesg after managing to survive a complete computer freeze. (And no it was not overheating, it was this.)

overheating
Follow the standard procedure: Give your PC a cleanout, removing dust from air intakes and fans.
With my laptop, I have to do this about every 4 months, otherwise it can shut down due to overheating - clogged air intakes.

Thought it was overheating, did all you mentioned. Heat levels are now acceptable once again. How ever I started to get those Xid -errors (which came up with some old posts on KDE terminal resize and nouveau driver). Currently testing the nouveau but it doesn't work with the game I get the crash with (Fatal Error: ARB_vertex_buffer_object not available).

Check nvidia versions and bug reporting procedure.
