Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

With Catalyst 12.1 my windows in KDE (no desktop effects) start flickering whenever a notification appears. I tried the CLUTTER_VBLANK=none setting but it didn't work. Enabling and disabling the Tear free desktop in amdcccle didn't work either.

Does somebody have a clue about that?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

ATI Catalyst 12.1 isn't compatible with GNOME 3.2 - it'll just default to GNOME 3 Fallback option and starts complaining about unable to load GNOME 3 as I've just tried it and removed it. Yet again ATI hasn't fixed the known problems, it's probably best for me to stick with the generic xorg graphics card drivers since xorg works properly.

Try to stop DE and delete /etc/ati/amdpcsdb. After restart DE and run amdcccle

Solved enabling raster graphics mode with this guide: http://linux4netbook.blogspot.com/2011/ … luido.html
.
    nano /usr/share/autostart/plasma-desktop.desktop
And modify
    Exec=plasma-desktop
to
    Exec=plasma-desktop -graphicssystem raster

nano /usr/bin/startkde
And modify
    kwrapper4 ksmserver $KDEWM
to
    kwrapper4 ksmserver $KDEWM -graphicssystem raster

restart X

Thanks for your answer but that didn't fix the problem.

I should precise my description fo the symptoms: not the whole desktop is flickering, the window contents disappear for a few milliseconds so that I can see the window background.

So I havn't tried 12.1 yet, but has anyone gotten suspend working right with catalyst? I know that it works on the open source driver since someone else I know has a machine with the C-50 APU and uses the opensource driver on it, but he has also had the same problem with the catalyst driver.

I have vga=0 and nomodeset as kernel options, I've tried disabling acpi calls using aticonfig, and several other tricks I've found on the forums in various combinations, but I can never get it to wake up.

Asus 1215b with the e-350 APU
XFCE with the power manager
Latest kernel and now catalyist 12.1

And I have never found an explicet error about it in the logs, but I may jsut be looking for the wrong thing.

PrepH: I have the same machine and suspend only started working reliably w/ the recent kernels using radeon. Radeon gives me far fewer kernel panics and hangs but runs about 10C hotter and w/ about 60% battery life vs. Catalyst. Even then I'll still get hard panics (alt-sysreq keys are useless), but at least get a readable backtrace. Because I still get borked resume if I modprobe kvm at any time (even if I modprobe -r it prior to suspend), I'm going to reinstall catalyst. I've given up on this machine having stability.

I think that this is a BIOS issue, based on some of what dmesg prints. FWIW I am about to take Catalyst for another spin.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'd like to upgrade to catalyst-total 12.1-1,  but  it fails with

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
catalyst-total: /usr/lib/libSlotMaximizerAg.so exists in filesystem
catalyst-total: /usr/lib/libSlotMaximizerBe.so exists in filesystem

I've discovered a changelog stating that

- Update to version 12.1. - Adds libSlotMaximizerAg.so and libSlotMaximizerBe.so

these were only added in version 12.1.

The only reason I can think of why they are on my system is because of
AMD-APP-SDK-v2.6-lnx64.tgz

Can someone confirm that?

.. and I guess it would be safe to to force the upgrade?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Going from catalyst-total 11.12 to 12.1 went just fine here. I suppose your AMD SDK package is not really a pacman package, judging by the name extension. You shouldn't just unpack tarballs into your root...

No, no pacman package. I'm actually waiting for someone to build one big_smile

Yes, upgrade went fine, when I forced it.

Unfortunately  cgminer is complaining now, so that's the next thing I have to sort out.

There are already a few AMD SDKs in the AUR.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Is cgminer looking in the right place? The amdstream package seems to install them in /opt, I don't know if it's polite enough to add that to the linker path.

No. It seems most paths are messed up.

Here's an strace for cgminer

(Although actually those are two different problems though. The strace is after I updated to 3.2.2-1-ARCH kernel and catalyst 12.1-1 and is not related to the initial problem of not finding the libraries for GPU monitoring.)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

You can edit /etc/ld.so.conf yourself, or add a file under /etc/ld.so.conf.d/.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I apologize if this has already been answered or covered somewhere else, but I could not find it so I decided to ask here (and yes I have looked). I have an integrated ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics card and would like to do some light gaming. Is this possible with the open source driver, or would I be better off installing XP or something? I don't want to use the proprietary driver, because it looks like its no good for anything other than games. I don't really want to use Windows (as I have no purpose for it), so I would like to use Linux. Thank you in advance.

(I decided not to open a new thread, since I believe this could be answered pretty simply by anyone here, I suppose the mods can move it, if it should not be here).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@hcaulfield: What do you mean by  "light gaming", because the 4250 is a weak card.

Catalyst just works fine for me for dayly usage. I have a Mobility HD 3470, I use KDE and it's been a long time since my last problem with Catalyst (mainly thanks to the great work of Vi0l0). Give Catalyst a shot before saying it is no good, it will also perform much better than open driver in games for sure.

I'll agree the proprietary driver has its issues, but there are good reasons to use it other than gaming. I don't game and I use it because it has much lower power consumption (and idle temperature). Give it a try.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Default archlinux and http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch repos.

X.Org X Server 1.11.4
Linux 3.2.2-1-ARCH x86_64
KDE 4.8.0-1

No OpenGL does not work under kwin, created default Xorg.conf with "sudo aticonfig --initial".
XRender works, but slow.
Also glxgears and glxinfo dont work:

glxgears
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 139 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
Minor opcode of failed request: 66 ()
Serial number of failed request: 13
Current serial number in output stream: 13

New installed KDE with a fresh user. Upgraded from
