pacman error

Hi,
I'm new to installing archlinux and already the frustration is setting in. I'm trying to install some packages with pacman but any package I attempt to install returns the error:
warning: database file for 'extra' does not exist
warning: database file for 'community' does not exist
error: target not found: gdm

or whatever the package is i'm trying to install. any help?

Did you follow the beginners guide?  Did you uncomment any mirrors in your mirrorlist?
