August 2005 Arch Screenshots

Introduction
Following the fair and democratic process completed here we'll now have a new screenie thread each month.

Please post your new screenshots in this thread from August 1 2005

We will not be locking the old Arch screenie thread or the monthly threads so that people may still post comments and ask questions about old screenies.

This new system allows us to monitor the screenie threads and eventually lock and delete them, as you can imagine they can take up quite some space in the dbase.

Guidelines
Pretty simple · DO NOT post full resolution screenshots!  You can use the "mogrify" command (pacman -S imagemagick) to make a thumbnail of your screenshot:

$ cp screenie.png thumb-screenie.png
$ mogrify -resize 20% thumb-screenie.png

Twenty percent of the original size is great for 1024x768 screenies.  You can then upload these images to your server and use the following code to show them on the forum:

This displays the thumbnail as a link to the screenie like this:

thumb-screenie.png

· If you do not have your own upload space you can upload to http://art.archlinux.org and link your shot here (with text) for discussion

· Several websites also offer free image hosting, of these  ImageShack is very popular and does a neat auto thumbnail:

2005053109197fv.th.png

You should use the "Thumbnail for forums (1)" link code that is supplied to post here smile

· Once the new month begins please do not post new screenies in the old threads!

· Any discussion about the creation of this thread should take place here

Well, in some parts of the world it's August so I've opened this thread smile

Thanks.  Yep, I'm working on some high-res bump maps too.  I never knew how much you could get xPlanet to do.  I'm getting it set up so that I can watch the weather move across the county to me.  ;-)  Once I get the bump maps setup, I'm probably going to be zooming in a little closer than currently, since the resolution will be much better.

@jackmetal: How are you doing the animations? I know that xplanet isn't realtime, so how often are you updating your image? I'm using 8m right now, but I've yet to add weather/earthquake data to the globe.

bare
busy - okay, 'not utterly comatose'

I've already changed the menu font and contents, but didn't bother with a new pic. It's not really a 'looks' thing, but how it behaves. But it's what I look at all the time - except that my app windows are usually fullscreen.

edit --  kinda like this, come to think of it. smile

I have 3 scripts that run from cron to do all the work.  I split it up to make it easier on me to keep up with and change...

Script 1: basically just downloads the updated cloud/weather map.  I changed it run every 4 hours between the hours of 6am-10pm (since I'm not on the computer in the middle of the night anyway, and found that it didn't change any more often). ;-)  I don't like to put a burden on sites that provide free downloads to stuff like this (so they'll keep doing it), so I download it 'round-robin' from a list of sites that host it.  I add all of my map downloads to this script.  I'm in the process of making changes to this so that it will be more dynamic and updated more often by building my own maps so that I don't have to download them and am pulling weather and satellite images to build them.

Script 2: updates the xplanet .png that I use for the background.  It runs every 15 minutes (and 1 minute before the next script).

Script 3: tests to see if I'm in X, and if so it will set the background using the newly updated image.

Re: August 2005 Arch Screenshots

WOW! Sounds like you've put alot of work into getting things customized. I'm not that far along, yet. I'm still working on some scripts to download maps and last night I added specular mapping to my globe. I hope to get some of the really hi-res maps from NASA and do a few one-hit renders today or tomorrow just to see how they look.

Re: August 2005 Arch Screenshots

lol   Yeah, I got sidetracked somehow from what I meant to be doing and ended up spending a day getting blasted xPlanet setup.  ;-)

I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with.  In case you wasn't aware, there is what looks like a pretty decent forum at the xplanet site http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/phpBB2..  I just recently joined, but haven't had the time to browse through it for tips yet..

Re: August 2005 Arch Screenshots

Yeah, I knew about the forum but couldn't get it to load yesterday when I tried to join. Got a PHP error about not being able to access the database.

I agree with you that getting sidetracked is easy when using xplanet to generate planetary renderings. Hell, I'm wasting so much time with this crap that I've not managed to get anything done for dibble's GIS project this week.

I started giving FVWM a go.

--- Edit ---
I'm using:
- FVWM.
- Torsmo with my own 'enhancement' to show the current MPD status
- XMMS with a skin I got from somewhere
- Background from deviantArt that I modified with the blue thing.
- Gnome terminal with transparent/tinted background
- "Milk" icon theme I got from some guy a while back.

Wow... looks nice.  Quick question - the decorations are different on you media player (xmms?) than the other stuff? Is that a normal fvwm feature?
