Hi all
I have a Dell Optiplex GX260 with a Pentium 4 Processor, I run the stock Arch Kernel (Linux 3.2.2-1).
My problem is that regularly while starting up my computer hangs at ':: Triggering uevents...', the cursor stops blinking and the light on my PC that shows its doing something doesn't blink or light up). This even happens with the Live CD (2011.08.19 - Core - Dualarch), although the cursor keeps on blinking but nothing happens.
After rebooting around 3-7 times it eventually gets past the ':: Triggering uevents...' and loads up my DE (KDE), now if I try and open Chromium there is a big chance my computer will freeze again, rebooting and trying to open Chromium again a couple more times seems to get past that. After Chromium has been running for a while everything is fine, there are no more crashes.
I have (using the Live CD) collected quite a few copies of /var/log. Here is one dmesg.log output:

Is this a bug in the Kernel? Have I set up something wrong? Is my old hardware dying on me?
Thanks in advance ![]()

Given you get the same effect from a Live CD and at various places I would suspect hardware. Run "memtest" first from a Live CD to check your RAM. You might also want to try SystemRescue CD or UltimateBoot CD to check your hard drive.

Thanks for your quick reply
I would definitely suspect hardware (especially as my PC isn't in the prime of its youth), however a MemTest86+ test and a HDAT2 and a Hitachi Drive Fitness Test throw up no errors what so ever (No bad segments, no warnings or anything).
This is just a theory of mine but my pc doesn't seem to hang with SystemRescueCD or Parted Magic (both Linux based), so maybe its just Arch specific, although I will need to do more testing on that front
Thanks

It turns out this issue isn't Arch Specific as it also happens when using live cds (Like SystemRescueCD)...
Are there any typical hardware or software issues that may cause this to happen?
Thanks
