XBMC - slideshow screensaver distorts music playback

Hi,

Have just done a fresh Arch install on a spare laptop (Thinkpad T60).

I have set up XBMC and want to use it mainly as a music player.  I also want to use the photo slideshow screensaver, sort of like a digital photo frame on steroids.

This all works OK and I am able to playback my FLAC collection.  The problem is that when the screensaver kicks in, and every time it transitions between images, I hear several seconds of distorted, "warbly" music.  I also get some large screen artifacts (black/grey areas, line patterns) during the transition.

It seems like the transition effect is overloading the system, maybe in terms of CPU cycles, but I'm not sure.

Any thoughts on what can be done?  Maybe I need to tweak the X server from the basic auto configured setup?  I'm sure this machine (1.83 GHz CPU, 1GB RAM) should be capable of doing what I want (music and slideshow).

Thanks
Francis

Re: XBMC - slideshow screensaver distorts music playback

Running top in a separate terminal indicates CPU usage is minimal as expected (but I'm not sure if xbmc is still running the screensaver when I do this!)

Could it be wireless data transfer speeds?  Both the FLAC audio and the JPG slideshow images are stored on a separate server and accessed through NFS, across a wireless connection.  I wouldn't have thought a few MB per image would be a big deal...

I've also posted over on the xbmc forum with a little more info, but no answers yet.  http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=122122

Are there any known issues with the xbmc audio player and ALSA?

The exact error message:

ALSA lib pcm.c:7339:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred
