I would like to bump this. I have an IDE CD/DVD multi-writer that keeps showing up as /dev/sr0. The main system storage device is however SATA (Gen. II) running on Intel's AHCI. The DVD super multi drive is the only IDE device in the system and it is the master IDE device by cable select jumper config. it is connected to the last ribbon slot on the cable. The drive is about four years old but its just been sitting on a shelf for most of that time. I reckon it has less than 10 hours runtime on it if that.
I'm no linux guru but I'm pretty sure it should be showing up as /dev/hdX. It will read and auto mount cd's under /media/$DISK_LABEL$ but dvd media are not detected at all. Yes, the bios will load and boot from a DVD. I have been wrestling this for near two weeks on my own. Can anyone help debug this?

systemd has its advantages; of these the most damaging are: corporatization, security bottlenecks, control obfuscation, and micro-managed forward compatibility pitfalls. Free Software meets Dictatorship. What a maroon.

Uff, no. /dev/hdX has been gone for a loooooooong time now. /dev/sr0 is fully correct.
Look into whatever you're using for automounting. Also check dmesg after you've inserted a dvd.

udev + udisk are the managers hal is not in use dbus is daemonized that's pretty much all I know.

I just checked, I don't get anything either in dmesg when I insert a DVD. It's detected anyway, but I use HAL. So now I have no idea whether your issue is in the drive or in udisks.
But there's this. Run "udevadm monitor". After inserting a DVD, I get this:
KERNEL[1210107.118190] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-6/1-6:1.0/host41/target41:0:0/41:0:0:0/block/sr0 (block)
UDEV [1210107.704385] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-6/1-6:1.0/host41/target41:0:0/41:0:0:0/block/sr0 (block)
KERNEL[1210123.009274] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-6/1-6:1.0/host41/target41:0:0/41:0:0:0/block/sr0 (block)
UDEV [1210127.486872] change /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-6/1-6:1.0/host41/target41:0:0/41:0:0:0/block/sr0 (block)So udev sees a disc being inserted. If you get something similar, the issue is then probably in udisks.

Which package is the udevadm command belong to? I get the command not found error for udevadm and udevinfo. Pacman says udev is installed and up to date.

Should I be running the udisks daemon (udisksd)? I checked the archwiki but the udisks page is a sub-article for udev and does not at all mention that there is a udisks daemon.
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/udisks
udisks
The udisks project provides:
a daemon, udisksd, that implements well-defined D-Bus interfaces that can be used to query and manipulate storage devices.
a command-line tool, udisksctl, that can be used to query and use the daemonThe actions that a user can perform using udisks are restricted using polkit.
systemd has its advantages; of these the most damaging are: corporatization, security bottlenecks, control obfuscation, and micro-managed forward compatibility pitfalls. Free Software meets Dictatorship. What a maroon.

The udisks daemon is usually started automatically by whatever app is using it (Nautilus, Thunar, etc). What mounts your CDs? DVDs should work the same way.

Well, /dev/sr0 belongs to the root group and is owned by root but root cannot even detect the dvd and, CDs work in the user space under this configuration so I will just have to chalk this up to a second faulty drive and grab the last one off of the shelf.
The first drive I tried was working fine on a ubuntu machine last week, the second drive I tried was working fine on a dual boot XP/Fedora machine a few years back. I find it hard to believe that sitting on a shelf or maybe being slightly bumped around disables 'only' the DVD functionality of these drives, but I tell ya what, it sure as hell would not surprise me if the devices were made to 'fail-on-condition' by the manufacturers. Eversince the DRM revolution, quality hardware is getting harder and harder to come by. I've seen DVD-ROM drives from '98 still in operation... this annoys me @ $30 a pop I might just have on my hands $90 worth of junk + shipping & handling.

For what it's worth, my PATA CD and DVD drives appear as sr0 and sr1 respectively. Can you manually mount?
