Running xonotic on primitive(at least) graphic card driver

Hi,
I 'part-timingly' play games. I have the specifications:

4gb ram, intel core2duo at 2.93ghz
nVidia8400gs 1gb(nouveau)

The game gives me about 15fps at 1024x800, effects turned to high, and anti-aliasing off. Can I get an upperhand advice on how to increase the performance?
thanks.

There's an easy way: drop nouveau and use nvidia drivers.

Nouveau drivers are good for 2D, but they suck at and are considered "experimental" for 3D...

This would be last thing I do if I go into a propertiery solution....... any other alternative???

Sure...scale down details, effects and resolution, install git-package, close all other applications, kneel down and pray (this is actually pointless, but billions of ppl do it everyday big_smile).

I use the proprietary drivers, too, and didn't run into any major problems...unfortunately nouveau simply ain't an alternative for 3D yet.

If you go by such anecdotes, then *everything* is "buggy". But in reality, the nvidia drivers are among the best Linux drivers. Topped only by the Intel driver, I'd say.

The big problem for nouveau currently is no reclocking support. The beginnings of that will be in kernel 3.4, and once it works reliably (it's quite unstable right now), it will bring a significant performance increase. Still, don't expect nouveau to ever come closer than 65% (maybe 70%) of the performance of the closed nvidia driver.

+1

I have an old AGP card and I could run UT2k4 on it with nvidia-173xx drivers but it's unplayable with nouveau: I get constant polygonal mess on the whole screen. Even openarena has some graphical glitches under nouveau.
