Real media streams

Is there a way to play Real media streams from the internet with Arch/Linux?

I'm looking for something like the Realplayer plugin for browsers. I already tried to install the realplayer version in the AUR but it's outdated and doesn't work with my x86/x64 anyway. I also tried to open the stream with VLC but it tells me there was nothing to play. I don't know anything of how Real media streams work but I guess it fails to get to the real stream. I have a link to a .ram file which contains a rtsp://some.url.smil string which VLC doesn't seem to understand.

I just want to play some Real media streams (which was a pain also with Windows) and I don't care if I have a browser plugin for that or a way to download them. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
