Hi All!
I have an older PC and everything worked well until just recently (about 2 weeks ago). After 'pacman Suy' I now have some problems with X rendering. I use 'slim' login manager, and when I type there, letters don't show, only cursor moves (for both login and password fields). After login, only upper half of screen is working well when using xfce terminal. In firefox, the whole screen works but many parts of page remain blank, show/hide window redraws some areas, some remain blank.
Googled but found only that: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=134953 without replies. Tried to wait and Suy again, but problem doesn't go away.
Is there any other driver to try? nvidia won't work since my card is supported by 173 driver and it is not compatible with current xorg.
All I can think of is falling back to some ubuntu lts.. Please, save me from that!..
Anton

Does the problem also exist when you use the generic vesa driver?

I did not try it yet. I actually looked for something generic but used 'mesa' keyword for search - what a typo
Thank you for suggestion!

Hi,
exactly the same here, my Geforce 5 FX works no longer under nouveau.
When i switch back to xf86-video-nv, everything works (but is quite slow naturally).
I changed the card to a older GeForce4 MX, which works perfectly with either nv and nouveau, so i guess it is a specific problem with the nouveau NV30, as my NV10 card works without changing anything but the card.

Replaced nouveau with nv. That was not easy: even after removing nouveau packages I had to blacklist nouveau and nvidiafb since they grabbed device. With nv all works ok though slower. vesa is really a driver of last resort, not setting frequency.
So the problem is with nouveau.
