I am unable to get vlc 2.0 to output sound. The Open Sound wiki recommends adding 'aout=oss' to ~/.vlc/vlcrc. That worked for vlc 1, but I'm having no luck with vlc 2.
It looks like vlc 2 adds a new config file at ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc. Adding aout=oss didn't work there either.
Any ideas?

Try rebuild vlc through abs with --enable-oss in PKGBUILD. It worked for me. It looks like oss is in vlc 2.0 disabled by default.

Thank you. That worked.

vlc-2.0.0-3-x86_64 works with OSS here after opening the Preferences/Audio dialog and changing Output/Output module from Default to Open Sound System.

That's odd. Open Sound System wasn't among my module options until I did what cmudik recommended.
Edit: Looks like the pkgbuild was updated: http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … 2191704d6c

Yep - "--enable-oss" is there.
Our packagers are not only good, but quick too! Thanks, Giovanni.

Re: vlc-2.0.0-5 update
Well, nobody's perfect. Downgraded to 2.0.0-3 to get oss back.

Sorry, I think that I've finally fixed it in vlc-2.0.0-7

Unfortunately, in my fresh Arch install everything works except oss4 in VLC. The option oss-output is simply gone...

upgpkg: vlc 2.1.0-1
- new upstream release
- remove OSS support
- switch back to extra/ffmpeg
- build against Lua 5.2
oss has been removed from the repos and dropped to the AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/oss/

oglikap, Welcome to the Arch Linux Forums.
Karol is right (as is true often enough to be pretty damn impressive). I am going to close this thread; please feel free to start a new thread and link back to this one. We do this because things in Linux change so fast that new problems and old solutions create confusion.
