Re: system hangs on nvidia 295.20-1 (kernel 3.2.6-2)

have you read this... Especially the parts about the setup, commenting out the dri and compositing. The nvidia driver has in-built compositing so turning it on in your xorg.conf is redundant and will cause problems. It's also good to note that having the nvidia proprietary driver is not always the best driver to have if nouveau is working why do you want to switch to the nvidia driver?

Re: system hangs on nvidia 295.20-1 (kernel 3.2.6-2)

I'm using xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig.
On nvidia driver I've got better performance then with nouveau.
nvidia:

glxgears
14475 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3114.524 FPS
15617 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3223.190 FPS

nouveau

glxgears
3575 frames in 5.0 seconds = 714.524 FPS
3617 frames in 5.0 seconds = 723.190 FPS

Also I can play many games by wine.
My xorg.conf below:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 295.20 (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-01.nvidia.com) Mon Feb 6 21:30:26 PST 2012

I am using the nvidia driver as well and it's been my experience that maybe you should try commenting out the dri2 module.

Section "Module"
    Load "dbe"
    Load "glx"
    Load "extmod"
# Load "dri2"
EndSection

Re: system hangs on nvidia 295.20-1 (kernel 3.2.6-2)

Five things:

1.) nvidia-xconfig is outdated and should not be used. You don't need any X configuration to use the nvidia driver on Arch. (on other distros you do, but even there you do *not* use nvidia-xconfig)

2.) glxgears is not a benchmark

3.) Loading dri2 doesn't hurt. It'll just sit there doing nothing, but will not interfere. Because nvidia is simply not using it.

4.) Even if you comment dri2 out from the nvidia-xconfig generated xorg.conf, it'll still get loaded!! Because it's on the list of extensions to be loaded by default. This is one example of the outdated-ness of nvidia-xconfig.

5.) glxgears is not a benchmark

Five things above don't seem to be solution.
What should I do then?
Stop using the xorg.conf file?
Blacklist dri2 somehow?

Nope. But they are nonetheless very useful pieces of info.

I don't know. Your log doesn't show any actual error. You could have a look at dmesg or some other system logs, it's possible you's see some Xid errors in there.

ekrek4 wrote:

The chances that it'll fix your problem are low, but yeah, get rid of it.

Read point 3 of my previous post again.

Re: system hangs on nvidia 295.20-1 (kernel 3.2.6-2)

I noticed a very big improvement turning on vsync and triple buffering together. Also gnome-shell works better for me with nvidia-prop than  nouveau when I enable vsync with it also at the same time.

14475 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3114.524 FPS means you're not using vsync. Should be the same as your monitor's refresh rate. 50-75 depending on monitor.

Re: system hangs on nvidia 295.20-1 (kernel 3.2.6-2)

I've tried:
- launch without xorg.conf
- generate xorg.conf by nvidia-settings
- comment dri2 module (Xorg.0.log anyway said module is loaded)
- adding kernel option amd_iommu=off
Everythig with no effect sad
Any suggestions?
Any tip could help me!
