cp renames files

I just downloaded a load of packages onto my pendrive, took it to my arch box and copied the contents over on the command line. During this process all filenames were shortened DOS style using ~ and numbers.

Why is it doing this & how can i get rid of it?

Re: cp renames files

What file system did you mount your pen drive as?  That is probably the culperate.  If you mount it as msdos, you'll have that issue..  You should mount it as vfat.

Your drive is most likely FAT formatted, which I think only supports 8.3 filenames

Re: cp renames files

Why wouldn't Windows accept one of its own filesystems?

Re: cp renames files

fat32 has a minimum size requirement of about 256mb. so no, you can't format a floppy fat32. i would think you could do it with a usb drive that's large enough, but i think generally they come formatted fat16.

and as medicated said in your first reply, you should mount it as vfat, which will let you use the long file names. read 'man mount' about fat and vfat to learn more about the mounting options, there are some handy ones.

Re: cp renames files

Thanks i usually use the auto option when mounting so it must be mounting it FAT16 instead of vfat. Cheers

edit: Though i have long filenames on the drive, their just being converted during the transfer which i find unusual . .
