19" LCD - recommendations?

Ok, so the title kinda says it all... I've been looking at the SyncMaster 930B - it's about $400 for a 19" 1280x1024 with a 8ms response time (wow!)...

Anyone have experiences with anything similar (I won't be purchasing until aroun the 15th/16th anyway)?

edit: the Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+ is also a possibility - similar specs and this one actually comes with a DVI cable (SyncMaster does not)

Can't speak for the 930B but my 19" SyncMaster 910T LCD has been awesome for about the last year. The 1280x1024 res is the only one it really likes, and things look a little fuzzy in lower resolutions. I'll never go back to CRT monitors, as this thing is the sharpest output I've seen. 8)

I've got the SyncMaster512N. Its got great clarity as ozar mentioned. I also noticed if you don't angle it slightly down versus up, letters look like crap. I'd go for it....and don't be a dummy and use pledge to clean the screen like me

I'm using SyncMaster 213T (21", 1600x1200 with pivot) at work. It's THE lcd I would recommend. AFAIK 19" version is very nice too.

you can't really go wrong with samsung. i've had a 172t for a couple of years, it's been one of the best computer buys i've ever made.

Just remember that 8ms tft's tend to have pretty sharp viewing angles, so it might not be the best choise if you want to watch movies with some friends. (I guess this is only an issue if you don't have tv-out

Samsung LCD's are top banana, granted.
I'm also reasonably happy with my Teac S 1902D (the actual panel manufacturer is Sanyo), although I do have problems booting my Linux using framebuffer when both connectors (digital and analog) are on. The embedded speakers also suck eggs, but I guess few people will actually use them.

Hi,

*general rant*
When I bought my LCD (17", a year ago), I went for a fast one(16ms), which
prolly has been the most stupid decision ever. Today, I wished I had taken
care for color authenticity. The problem is that you can hardly judge this
from any specs and even if you check it in the shops.
Eg, my beloved scite colors the background of php scripts in a light pink and
javascript in a light blue to make it seperate from oridinary html code, but
the monitor doesn't really display it Now I can guess how images are
displayed. Indeed it is impossible to match the colors with the CRT which
hangs at the second connector.
A friend of mine bought two slower 19" ViewSonic TFTs, which doesn't show
these problems.

Get a Dell 2001FP or 2005FPW. 20.1" of (widescreen) pleasure for almost no money, esp if you're a US resident.

Hmmm didn't know that - but that's a great point... maybe I'll step down to a 12ms version. Also, that article features the second monitor I mentioned.

Oh and dibble: "almost no money" is ~$600 - sheesh! JK - it actually looks pretty cool... and I do like the whole USB-hub-on-monitor thing...

What about those nice 52" plasma screens at 20.000$ ?

From my personnal experience, Samsung is a good brand.

If I were you, I would try to see the screen closely.

My brother recently bought a Samsung SyncMaster 193P.
This baby is THE high-end 19" TFT monitor for Samsung, for now, AFAIK
All reviews claim it is the best monitor for a graphics designer (as my brother). Best colors, best contrast.. best... Excellent warranty also. Well, as far as I've noticed, it's the most expensive 19" TFT monitor on the offers around here (thus, there must be something about it, even if I'm no expert).

The only thing which makes it a bit uncompatible with your desires is the fact that it is 20ms (they say it's 8ms gray to gray). I haven't heard people complaining about this though. I've seen tons of reviews where people praise this monitor, for one reason or another.

I can't compare it with anything else, since I don't have access to computers with TFT monitors around here.

P.S. one thing to notice: when I went to buy it, I was brought (I was with my brother) two 19" TFTs one after another with some kind of gray spot, a subpixel impurity (or whatever they called it) - this made a group of pixels look a bit gray. Those weren't dead pixels. Both 2 monitors were changed - the warranty states that if during the first 14 days you find ONE dead pixel, the monitor is changed with a new one. Also, I believe it has something special about the warranty (less dead pixels - then it's changed, or something similar). I can say I was a bit surprised by this issue. Well, this is Romania, Eastern Europe... maybe this does make a difference, even if it shouldn't.

I was looking at those a few months ago and with a coupon you could get it for $370! Too bad it was for US residents only. You should definetely check out eBay too: there were a lot of people selling those monitors in sealed boxes for prices just over $400.

Phracture: don't read specs. Go to some large store and compare the quality of a few LCDs by running same thing on all of them standing one by one. You can be really surprised how different can they be when you can compare the picture. IMO Samsung is better than Dell but this depends on your preferences. Most Dell LCDs I was comparing had a bit wormer colors than Samsung LCDs but the Samsung LCD colors were very close to CRT which can be very important for example for a web designer. On the other hand I know some people preferring Dell just becasue they liked those warmer colors :-)

hmm ... cant you calibrate this monitor to show "real" colours? i'm not an expert and only looking in a laptop screen i don0t know how it works on real displays but it would make not much sense, if you would not be able to be able to calibrate the display to show the colours how they should be (e.g. for print-media, this monitors would not come very usefull)

the dell 2001FP looks really interesting but it is a way too much money for a monitor: 1'074.92 CHF (1,2CHF~=1us$)

Yes, you can try but it doesn't really look the same IMO :-)
Samsung colors were looking closest to CRT and real colors (a good example is light grey which on some LCDs is almost invisible or turns into red if you manipulate it).
You can see this when you compare a few LCDs side by side.

I bought a Samsung 910T about half a year ago and I think it's a splendid
screen. It's very sharp because of the DVI-I connector, and has excellent
contrast and brightness. It sold for less than 480 euro here now. The only
downside is the speed, but I also checked out the 913N which is actually
cheaper (400 euro) but does 8ms response, but it's contrast and sharpness
are worse.

I think response time and image quality is a tradeof. If you're a gamer you'll
probably want the 8ms, or you may reconsider buying TFT at all cause like
250-300 euro should get you a decent CRT instead.

the 2005FPW is same as 2001FP except of the wideness and no pivot, right? as i do a lot of writing, i think that pivot would come very usefull seeing the papers in full format.

how does it work with guarantee, if you would order it and send it to me? (is dell usa and dell switzerland communicating?) if you can find the 2001 for around 550usd included shipping, it definitely be cheaper and also very interesting. what i'm waiting now is the "Orbit" ( http://www.orbit-iex.ch ) where there should all of the companies present their products ... if i find something interesting, i will report

It's got a pivot because it's a widescreen monitor. It has a different aspect ratio (16:10 instead of 4:3). The 2001FP is a monitor with a regular 4:3 aspect ratio.

If you're looking for good deals on the Dells, register and hang around the http://www.bargainshare.com/ site for a few days, as they are almost always listed with incredible deals/coupons. I've seen both of those Dell models listed in the mid to upper $400's before.

If I'm not mistaken, Samsung actually produces the screens for the Dell monitors (also Apple's displays I believe), and they are renowned to be some of the best LCDs out there. So either way you go, you'll probably be alright. One thing to consider with the widescreen 2005FPW is that you actually have less height (pixel wise) than on the regular 4:3 aspect ratio 2001FP...I have a friend with a 2001FP and it is pretty damn impressive!

I'm looking to get an LCD myself sometime soon, but will probably wait a bit to see what else comes out and how far prices will drop, as I'm not in too much of a rush.
