[solved] VDPAU doesn't work on 128mb vram

I set my smplayer to use VDPAU instead of VX, but it just crashes upon launching a movie file. Here is partial log:

Also, once I fail to run a movie this way, I get errors running vainfo, which prior to smplayer crash runs just fine.

Smplayer has it's own config at ~/.config/smplayer. I was wondering if you could transpose those settings to smplayer's config file if the layout was similar.

However I did some research and it appears that MPlayer's config is not ignored. According to SMPlayer's FAQ, you can disable the screensaver using MPlayer's heartbeat-cmd which is set in ~/.mplayer/config. (It might ignore other options like "vo" and "vc" though.)

Try running SMPlayer with those commands:

smplayer -vo=vdpau, -vc=ffmpeg12vdpau,ffh264vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau, [file]

Sorry if I can't be much help as I don't use SMplayer. (I'll try later this evening)

Have you tried SMPlayer2 from the AUR? (Mplayer2 has better VDPAU support)

Just tried SMPlayer2-git from the AUR. I set Preferences => Video => Output driver: to vdpau, then checked all the boxes under Configure. Changed nothing else and opened a video without error.

Edit: Options => View Logs => mplayer2

Ok, a development.
SMplayer2/Mplayer2: Program no longer crashes, but upon switching the playback to vdpau. it becomes very choppy. Upon resize, the video freezes but sound continues. The extra window space created by resizing smplayer2 window is filled with green colour.

EDIT: scratch that. I checked all options in Configure and now the behaviour is the same as in mplayer1 - crashes instantly.

EDIT2: The above happens if I change to vdpau during playback. If I just start smplayer2 and then open some file, I get:
Video filters are disabled when using vdpau.

EDIT3: I also experience a massive framerate drop in non-static scenes in movies since installation of mplayer2.

So I was looking through your original post again and paid more attention to the output of your vainfo command:

So, a couple of things:
1. Does the file '/usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so' exist?
2. In your xorg.conf, do you have 'Load dri' in the "Module" Section?
3. If so, have you tried with the following added?

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

4. Have you updated the following packages? [vdpau-video, libvdpau, libva]
5. Is it similar to this thread?

This is curious.
This probably goes without saying, but have you tried running mplayer on it's own with the above video options? (mplayer -v -vo=vdpau, -vc=ffmpeg12vdpau,ffh264vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau, )

If so, do you get any errors, framedropping, latency, etc? MPlayer might be more verbose about the issue with the -v option.

Edit: Was doing some testing and it appears that SMplayer does read your ~/.mplayer/config. Using my current config which contains the various vdpau options with SMPlayer2 caused no video to be displayed when trying to use xv. However, commenting out the various options and relaunching SMPlayer2 I was able to seemlessly swap between vdpau and xv.

Not sure if this'll help, but check your ~/.mplayer/config for any conflicts.

Edit2: I can't reproduce your problem on my machine using the 9600GT card. I'm also using mplayer2-git - A movie player for linux (uses statically linked libav; git version)
I'll continue looking, hope you can get it working.

Edit3: Try vdpauinfo from the AUR. Perhaps that can indicate potential errors.
