HTPC Struggles To Play HD Content

I built a HTPC running Arch 64, 4 gigs of ram and a ASRock AMDE350 M1 APU and it does not play HD content well at all.  Unfortunately this motherboard does not support OCing so that isn't really a possibility.  This happens in VLC and XBMC.  The specs seem like it should do at least 720, because I have a laptop with roughly the same specs also running Arch and it has no problems with it.

Any ideas?

Re: HTPC Struggles To Play HD Content

Do you have the proper graphics drivers intalled?
Try running lspci and posting the output.

% lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF110 [GeForce GTX 560 Ti] (rev a1)

Come on, guy. Don't make us google your specs for you. It's nice to hear that you have 4 GB of RAM (lol not really), but RAM is irrelephant here. The CPU and GPU are what matter in HD playback.

Radeon HD 6310

What does top say when you play something in VLC ? 100% CPU ?

Re: HTPC Struggles To Play HD Content

Install the proper drivers (fglrx) and use a player which support hardware decoding (e.g. mplayer or smplayer).
The last time I played around with h264 decoding together with my ATI HD4670 I couldn't get it to work nicely. Neither with radeon, nor with fglrx.

vaapi is still heavy work in progress. I think it will take another 6-12 month unless we see stable hardware h264 acceleration with noveau & radeon.

I also run an AMD e350 box but added a GeForce 9500GT for stress-free HD experience.

Under Windows though 1080p is no issue with the E350.

My archlinux x86_64 host:
AMD E350 (2x1.6GHz) / 8GB DDR3 RAM / GeForce 9500GT (passive) / Arch running from 16GB USB Stick
