gnome panel error

Hi all,

I get this error when I start up Gnome:

"I've detected a panel already running, and will now exit" (and there is an "OK" button)

I start up Gnome using "startx" and when I click "OK" everything seems fine, no weird exiting etc.

Here's how the error looks:

Obviously if you need any logs, let me know.

Thanks

Re: gnome panel error

Check Sessions under Desktop -> Settings (you'll find it... I'm not sure about the correct term, I've only used GNOME with a hungarian locale set) if there are 2 gnome-panels set to autostart.

Re: gnome panel error

You'll also find that changing those settings makes it impossible to log out.

In order to get rid of the error message, remove .gnome, .gnome2, and .gnome2_private:

rm -r ~/.gnome*

what will that do? Are there any settings that will instantly need to be checked?

Re: gnome panel error

No, Gnome settings are stored in .gconf.

BTW, after doing this, don't save your session upon logging out... That will cause gnome-panel to start its old crap again.

Re: gnome panel error

Obviously because gnome-panel is triggered redundantly in the session settings.

What's less easy to explain is why Gnome prevents you from logging out after changing the session settings - the reason that the gnome-panel problem cannot be permanently solved... :?

Re: gnome panel error

Hmm... Looks like you can log out after changing the settings. I'll see if I can save the config...

Re: gnome panel error

Just delete session file in /home/YOURUSERNAME/.gnome2 and reboot without saving the current session and the error will not appear again.

Re: gnome panel error

But if you save your session after that, it screws up again.

BTW, removing the redundant gnome-panel entry in your session properties and logging out will not do a thing - Gnome triggers the panel twice anyway.
