I'm currently running a Gentoo laptop and for the first time I'm planning on putting together a linux-box from scratch. I like the way portage manages dependencies but I'm not to keen on building everything from source so I think Arch will be a good distro for me.
For my new system, I think I'll go with a AMD 64 3000+ s939 processor. I done some googling and I got the impression people where having trouble getting various s939 motherboards to work.
I read this thread at the Arc forum and the ASUS A8V Deluxe and MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (nForce 4 Ultra)
motherboards probably works ok. But, since I'm no gamer I think I could do with on-board graphics?
Any other motherboard recommendations/experiences?

For an AGP based board, I really recommend the ASUS A8V deluxe. I have 2 of these and everything works. Onboard gigabit nic, sound, SATA with the VIA controller and firewire all work flawlessly in Arch.

Thanks for your recommendation.
I must admit I know almost nothing about computer hardware, but if I understand correctly your A8V deluxe don't come with onboard graphics. I will not do any gaming but I would like to plug in an old PCI TV card and rip to disk. If I decide on a motherboard without onboard graphics, do you have any recommendations for a suitable graphics card that won't give me any trouble with (Arch) Linux?

I'm not a gamer either so I just use a cheaper video card. In both of my Athlon 64 systems I'm using an MSI geforce FX5200. It's a more than decent, fanless video card.

Ok, I will take a look at the MSI geforce card.
As a non-gamer, what is the most demanding aplications/activites you perform on your box?
I will use the box for development and if I can get my old TV-card to work, watch and rip som telvision.
I just found this thread at linuxquestions.org and it might be I will do just fine with a cheaper (sempron) processor. Darn, I'v just decided on the AMD 64 3000+ s939 but now I might need to do some more thinking...

If you wait a bit, AMD should be releasing their socket 939 Semprons. I remember reading that to keep up with Intel, AMD have decided to enable the 64bit instruction set on their Semprons.

I have not had any problems with my Chaintech VNF4 with Arch. You can find it here for $79.99:

It does not come with an onboard video card, but any Nvidia card will work fine with linux. ATI cards should work as well, though I do not have any experience with them. Personally, I have a Chaintech 6200 that is really nice, which you can find here for $69.99:

Though if you do not plan on using any graphics intensive work, you can probably get by with a much slower card.

I recently made a few upgrades to my main desktop. Upgraded to an ASUS A8N-E motherboard, Athlon 64 X2 4400 CPU and a geforce 6200 PCI-E video card. Again, everything works perfectly using the AMD64 port of Arch.

I've found this reweiv of the MSI K8T Neo2 mob and especially this
Everything on this motherboard works excellently in GNU/Linux, using either a 64-bit or 32-bit kernel.
sounded promissing.
I've also read this thread at the Gentoo forums and this specific post made me interested in the MSI K8T Neo2.
Any Arch users having experience with a MSI K8T Neo2 mob?
