Yet another lirc problem

I've installed the ird-utils and lirc packages with pacman
modprobe irda irtty lirc_dev
lircd -n (to get an output without the need to look in the log
but when I try irsend/irw or other, lircd spits this back at me:

[root@toplap oh]# lircd -n
lircd 0.7.1: lircd(any) ready
lircd 0.7.1: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd 0.7.1: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
lircd 0.7.1: default_init(): No such file or directory
lircd 0.7.1: caught signal
Terminated

some dmesg output
modprobe lirc_dev:    lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, at major 61

The ir device:
ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a NS16550A

Edit.
the ir device is a built in one on a ibm T41 laptop

Wath I'm trying to do is to use my laptop to controll a dvd player
