Arch Linux boot help..

Hi Guys,

I want to try Arch Linux...but problem is I can't boot the the install cd. I think it has something to do with my bios. I've got Asus rampage motherboard which is running uefi.

Read a lot of posts but all point to boot problems after installing the OS. Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Re: Arch Linux boot help..

It's not really a boot problem if it's a bios problem. It's like searching for "stillbirth" to try and fix infertility. Try refining your search terms.

Re: Arch Linux boot help..

Hey /dev/zero,

Ok I’ll try to make it as clear as I can. The point I am trying to make is that UEFI is still relatively new. Most Linux destros are designed to boot off BIOS not UEFI. Based on whatever reading I’ve done so far, I think it would be safe to assume that Arch Linux is no different. When I try to boot of the Arch Linux cd, I can just see a line of text (don’t remember what it is exactly but it’s got Peter Anvil name in that line).

Help would be much appreciated

Thanks guys

This is no way to get a problem solved. If you actually do want to boot off your Arch CD, you need to put more effort into finding out what's wrong, and you need to give more than just mention how you can see a line of text but you can't be bothered noting it down for reference.

Please refer to the forum guidelines on "How to post". This isn't a place for hand-holding lazy people.

/dev/zero

My friend have you had a bad day?? Had a fight with your girlfriend and got kicked out of the house?? Or something like that?? There are some people who just like to see negative... n you /dev/zero sir are one of them.

You ignored the whole post n picked one line out of it n gave me *hit. If you can’t help, then why post? Why even bother? Ok to make it up to you I’ll even give you the line that you made such fuss about READ IT CAREFULLY.

“ISOLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 ETCD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Arvin”

Does that make a difference now??

Your complaints are irrelevant.

Given the woeful level of information you provided, I had not figured out yet whether or not I could help.

Because I like to welcome the great thinkers of the world into Archlinux.

Not really. But rumours about my clairvoyant powers are mainly just rumour, so I had not much way to know in advance that the line of text wouldn't help much.

I do have trouble believing that this is the first and only thing to appear on your screen from the moment you power the computer on.

Re: Arch Linux boot help..

Ontopic:

Take a look at Archboot. That should normally support UEFI booting.

Actually, this line says a lot... It says that you're using the 2010.05 release, downloaded from God-knows-where (or when), which contains the old 2.6.xx kernel and waaay outdated packages. The newer release (2011.08) comes with ISOLINUX 4.04 and is on a newer, 3.0.x kernel.

/dev/zero is right. Clairvoyance isn't the predominant trend on the Arch forum. Please, do bother jotting it down next time... At least on your mobile phone or something, if a pen and paper is out of reach.

Re: Arch Linux boot help..

I think what you need is Grub2 which is a UEFI branded version of grub.

Re: Arch Linux boot help..

I think OP needs to read the wiki more.

Youtube is nice and all but our wiki is better (at least for Arch Linux stuff).
