I've had this problem lately where the speakers don't mute automatically when I plug in the headphones. It started happening some time in the last two weeks. It happens with every user, and it's not a kernel issue: it also happens if I use linux-lts and it definitely worked a couple of weeks ago with 3.2 series. Happens with both pulseaudio and plain ALSA. Switching the audio output manually with pulseaudio works fine, it just doesn't switch automatically. Works fine in Fedora and Windows, so it's also not a hardware problem. Any ideas of what may be the cause?

There's a thing called 'Headphone Jack Sense' and when it's turned on, it mutes the speakers when you insert your headphone jack. Check your sound settings e.g. alsamixer.

Thanks. I had to unistall pulseaudio-alsa to enable the automatic muting in alsamixer. I still wonder how it got disabled.
