ALSA minimum volume is 18; PCM control doesn't work

Hello,

Recently, I noticed that the minimum volume I can set in alsamixer is 18, and the next lowest goes immediately to zero. Also, the PCM control doesn't do anything; I can adjust it but it doesn't affect the volume. Previously, I didn't have this issue; I could adjust the volume in alsamixer in increments of 3, all the way down to three. Since I generally use headphones, 18 is often too high for comfort, and some applications whose internal volume control controls PCM obviously can't adjust this any more.

I noticed this problem happening on another computer which is running opensuse, but never really bothered to do anything about it. The details are slightly different; lowest audible volume is 16, and I can adjust below that, e.g. to 13, but it's muted at that stage.

Wondering if anybody else has come across this problem before. My card is an Intel onboard with Sigmatel STAC9200

Thanks in advance.
